Just bought a David Austin rose, 'Heritage'.

Hello everybody,

I went to Gardenworld in Springvale (aprox 40 min drive from melb) and bought 'Heritage' by David Austin. Anyone who lives in Melb should visit that place one day. It's Huge!!!

I'm hoping the flowers would look nice - it wasn't in bloom when i got it...it was the only plant that looked healthy. The other roses had black spots..

Anyway, if anyone has any photos of this rose please share because i like to see more. I was thinking of getting Sharifa Asma, but they have one in stock.

Later, i potted my rose.

There are questions that i like to know:

a) the weather has been very hot and dry in aust. I am thinking if it ever rain, i will move my pot to a shelter position to prevent black spots developing. Am i being a bit far-fetched here?

b)The pot is quite big, and I like to know do roses and annuals like petunnia mix together well and live in harmony?

Here you are Jimmy. In my experience heritage is healthy and doesnt get much blackspot. Shariffa Asma is also alovely rose with a nice fragrance

By all means, do plant them in your garden now. Make sure you water them in well. Since it is so warm there, I'd provide them with some afternoon shade for about a week. Place a lawn chair over them or buy some shade cloth and rig up some stakes to attach it to. Since it is so warm, keep an eye on the roses so they don't dry out during the next week or two--but don't drown them either. That can kill them as easily as too little water can. You probably have what is known as "blind shoots." I copied this definition from a website which I cannot name. "A blind shoot is a fully grown or developed shoot that fails to produce a flower. A cool spring most often is the cause of blind shoots. Although they may appear anytime during the growing season. One way to detect a blind shoot is that instead of a flower bud at the end, there is a group of small leaves that look similar to a husk of wheat. To remedy a blind shoot cut it back by half its length, new growth should grow and flower normally" Hope this helps.

Rebecca- your roses are gorgeous but so much work. I live in Massachusetts. It is so difficult to even dig a hole 10 inches deep with all the rock, boulders and ledge so I try to buy only own root roses. I have gotten some wonderful own root roses from DA and have some more scheduled for delivery next week. I hope they add more own root to their collections. I recently ordered 'Queen of Sweden' and 'Windermere' which is by far my healthiest DA rose and covers herself with delicate soft blush pink blooms from early summer till fall. She is cane hardy in my Z5b-6a garden. The only negative is lack of the "to die for" strong perfume scent that Austins are so known for. sharon

While I don't really care for striped roses, I can admire some for being beautiful. This one really falls flat for me. It's neither beautiful or unique. I think if they had released a striped rose that was more graceful and romantic looking with more of a 'wow' impact it would have been better received. For example, Eduard Manet - this rose is the sort of style I wish DA had gone in for their first striped rose. Extra points that Eduard is also very fragrant, and their new rose is not

that looks superb! but do they last long in a vase? do u have any photos of sharifa asma? I still can't tell the difference between both of them, I mean, out of the 2 which one has a dark pink?

They will last 3 or 4 days if you pick them as buds.The next pic is Shariffa Asma.It has a nice fragrance

Sharifa asma looks pretty there...I can't almost tell the difference between her and Heritage in terms of color, but the petals are a give away.
Brother Cadfael is a too pinkish. I prefer blush pink with some white color.
Geoff Hamilton looks nice too... I love "the cup with ribbons" type of roses - they look so different to other roses.
