clumping dwarf date

Hi I'd appreciate any help.

I purchased a few dwarf dates marked phoenix roebellini from Bunnings in large pots...they have clumping trunks 5,6 even one with 9 to the pot.. are they a hybrid with reclinata or is the technique used by propagators likely to result in such multi trunked wonders...they look like all the roebellinis I have from small to tall (all of which are single trunked)

I dont know a lot about Palms but I do know that the date palm only has one trunk.
Maybe they planted so many seeds in one pot and they have all grown together.
Can you pull then apart. I am sure P.reclinata has only one trunk also.
Perhaps you could ring Bunnings and have a word you may find someone with a little knowledge.

If foliage is like P. roebelenii (spelling!) then it probably is that species, which as mistymorn says is always single-trunked, though there are some clumping Phoenix spp. such as P. reclinata, P. loureiroi, even P. dactylifera!

I think what you are seeing is the common practice of multiple seedlings in the one pot.

Hi Ottawan- I've been mostly inactive on GW these days as my yard was pretty much on autopilot... though now I've moved and it's time to start again. But, I got a notification about your post and I can now answer my own question above! Here in RI, based on my pics, harvest time for the dwarf empress peach is Sept 1st - 15th ish. My plant got to be about 5'6' high and at least as wide. I had it up against the house where it got good reflection off the grey paint. Combined with great soil (9" loam over sandy gravel), my dwarf empress was very happy. Thinning took quite a bit of time as like to attempt 10x as many peaches as I thought it could handle. I did get some brown rot and leaf curl because I really never set up a spray schedule for just this bush. I'm not a peach connoisseur but... clinging fruit was tasty, and I always looked forward to the spring flowers. I believe I will plant a new one here at the house.

Some bamboo have a weeping habit and there is nothing you can do about it if you don't like that look. What I can tell you is that pruning bamboo is not like pruning other plants, trees, or bushes. What you prune out is gone forever and nothing will grow back to replace it. As a result, "corrective" pruning that might work with other plants will not work with bamboo. The only thing I have found that will work with wayward culms is to tie them in an upright position until they harden off. However, this works better with large-culmed bamboo where the culm is simply growing at an awkward angle. With something as flexible and thin as what you have, you may not be able to get much benefit from this approach.

Thanks everyone, here is a picture of the garden near the house. I put in a row of globe arborvitaes. I planted some California poppies, sun flowers, malva, and a few other annuals to fill up the space while the shrubs grow to block out the cement wall. I also planted some tiny mophead hydrangeas, a bunch of cone flowers, and some other perennials to grow to potting size. :) Laura

If it's been that long it's a safe bet it's root bound. Especially if you are sone 10 and it gets lotls of sun and heat.

sorry about the spelling but wow interesting thought with a grower using so many seedlings....not very economical considering they could have sold up to 9 separate plants for same price......
to follow up 1. no they cannot be pulled apart the trunk is firmly a trunk with the half dozen or more other trunks coming out....
2.I'll see if I can get the name of the grower from Bunnings (though I see this week all their dates are single trunks) and enquire directly with the grower.

Thanks for your help...the plants are spectacular if you thought dwarf dates single trunk were great then these...if I train them to be elegantly curved etc will be brilliant..cheers
