I feel as if I have climbed Everest getting on to this forum. Took a tip from one of you and entered an American state zipcode - in my case it was Connecticut - don't ask me why ! Had to change my user name several times, then had to answer email to register, got taken to the US, back to Oz, into forums, into rose forums, out to log in ... what a nightmare - all on dialup. I must be mad. Anyway just wanted to say hello to you all and that I am looking forward to joining in. I garden in Qld, love roses particularly the old garden roses and the new shrub roses and envy anyone who can grow them well. Bye for now.

Plenty of us rose grower here in Qld I am not saying we all grow them well though.
Not even a week since I sprayed but today I notice black spot back again
Due no doubt to that beautiful rain we had days ago and all the humidty
Every morning I cut off all the buds so I do get to enjoy them in the vase they are so beautiful.

I am French but I hope you'll understand my English. I live in Burgundy, in central France and own an apartment on the fifth floor. I have what we call here a "terrasse", quite big (60 square metres) and I started planting it about thirty years ago. If I had to give you some advice it would be to get pots or rather troughs that are quite big as plants grow quicker than you think, even if you buy so-called 'miniature' plants. In the long run they will get big ... In other words if you intend staying where you are long, think big for the containers. I have just had the heart-rending experience of having to get rid of some slow-growing plants, planted about 25 years ago, that had got too big for the troughs and possibly too heavy for the terrasse. It's a horrible experience, when you love plants. One of them was a beautiful pine (50 centimetres tall when I bought it) which I had to get rid off (it was 2 metres tall)and unfortunately I had to cut it and it was a sad experience. I would have liked to post a photo of it and the terrasse but I don't know how you can do it on this forum. Good luck with your gardening Greenfingers21

When planting, water the soil around the rose as you plant to settle it and fill any voids. Don't tamp or pack the soil. Water morning so any wet leaves can dry. Water draining during the night could be leaving the plants with less moisture than may be desirable. It needs to be available during the heat of the day when evaporation from the leaves is the greatest and loss of feeder roots when planting means moisture cannot be replaced so the foliage wilts. As stated above, losing soil from the roots when planting causes tiny feeder roots to fall away, leaving the plant with no means to take up moisture. These feeder roots grow back quickly but until they do, your plant will show signs of water distress. Fertilizers applied when planting can burn newly emerging feeder roots so fertilizers should not be applied until after the first bloom or the bush is growing well. A little aged horse manure or an organic slow release fertilizer is fine but it should not be in direct contact with the roots. Mix it well with the soil in the bottom of the hole before planting so the roots can grow into it. If these were own root plants they should be planted no more than an inch deeper than they were in the pot. Feeder roots grow in the top six inches of soil. Larger deeper roots are anchor roots. Grafted bare root roses should be planted so the graft knob is 4 inches or more below the soil surface to protect it from winter freeze. E-mail me for instructions on planting a potted bush to avoid soil loss and transplant stress. Overwatering is easy to do if you have poor draing clay and extremely difficult if you have well draining sandy soil. Digging a hole in clay and adding new soil or over amending what's there can create a bathtub that holds water. If this was done, you should make sure you are not overwatering and drowning the roots. Roots need oxygen just as we do. Water pulls it down to the roots but water setting on the roots can prevent them from using it. When I plant I settle the soil around the bush with water and don't tamp or compact the soil. I let it be as loose as possible without leaving voids. Rain and watering will settle the soil as much as it needs to be.

Actually, that was the side I didn't do anything to other than cut a few of the larger berry bushes at the bottom of the hill. That birch is in rough shape and without staking it up and waiting several years, it won't survive. I would just assume take it down since it's not really in a great location anyway. I hate to do it since they are becoming relatively scarce due to disease and insects. This picture http://minus.com/lbx4OfKnwRF4xc shows what are definitely blackberry/raspberry bushes. I wouldn't mind having them, in fact I would welcome having a ton more, just not here. Being on the slope they will not be easy to get to when the mature and have fruit. If there was a way to transplant them or something I would love to hear it. I had tried it in the past, but the only way I have ever seen them grow was by accident and negligence. Based on the size of a few of the lower bushes, I would bet they may produce a limited amount of fruit. The smaller ones at the top of the hill however are definitely not mature enough from my experience. Going off on a tangent... I loved having berry bushes growing up and we had a large sandy area on my parent's property that they grew like crazy in. They eventually began to die off and my dad chopped them all down. The began to come back by the time I went to college, but it took a while to get any amount of fruit from them. My last year at college I rented a small cottage on a back road that had the biggest patch of black raspberries I had ever seen. I started picking as soon as they began to ripen and then ever couple days for the next 3 weeks. I stopped for lack of room in the freezer for 1gal ziplock bags. I made at least a dozen pint jars of jam and a few quarts. I gave a bunch away but i'm hoarding the last few of the "good" batch for myself. :) So in other words, I would love to have berry bushes, just not where they are. A lot of what you see on the ground on the left side (looking from the house) is debris and not much in the way of live plants other than some weeds. Obviously it is still very early here and not much has come up yet though. The tree shown in the background of this picture http://minus.com/lbwhVJrx76OE9d appears to be planted from what is left of the mulch/preparation around the base. This shot http://minus.com/lvFny84VUSjeW shows a rock swail that comes down from what is left of the last owners fish pond sort of thing. There is a reddish low lying plant growing on either side that I failed to get a close up picture of. It appears that it will look nice later in the spring but needs some weeding and/or mulching. I will take your advice and try posting some pictures on the "name that plant" forum. In the meantime, would I benefit from getting some sort of tall meadow grass mix to put down in a few weeks? *whoops, I wrote a book

Randy, I am sorry for your recent loss. When my dad passed away five years ago, I found myself in a similar situation. My only sibling passed away eleven years earlier and I never had the chance to grieve, but instead I had to take care of my mom. Can you or your siblings care for your dad for a little while? I am only suggesting this because the situation is still so fresh and raw. It may help to have a little time pass before you guys make such a big decision. You really want to find the right kind of care and that may take some time. After four years (and I am not suggesting you take your father that long by any means) of caring for my mom, I needed help. A social worker suggested for me to try a "BOARD AND CARE FACILITY". I live in California, so I'm not sure about Pennsylvania, but these facilities are located in a single family dwelling, in regular neighborhoods. If you go to the Care Giver forum on Gardenweb, I posted a thread a couple of months ago that gave an address for a publication that lists different levels of care for senior facilities. Again, sorry for you loss.

Marvellous work - what a stayer !
Welcome fellow rosarian - or should I say, soon-to-be-rose-addict ! I am new too but learning quickly (Melbourne). I just decided tonight that I am going to copy some of these postings into a Word document in my own special folder called Rose Tips so I can refer to them again in future, as I find all this experience so valuable.

Welcome to this wonderful forum.
Be aware though, it will feed your Rose Addiction unmercifully.
I started with buying a Bonica, simply because I thought it was a pretty little thing, now it is quite large and seems to want to be some sort of climber and it has 14 friends and I have a loooooooooooooooooooong list for the rose selling season ahead.

Have many happy days with the Rosies here who are so kind and helpful with their information to Newbies.

Thanks for the welcome everybody. I have heaps of questions which should keep this forum ticking over for awhile! It will be wonderful to have someone there when I have a problem or want to know something.
I caught the bug years ago - planted 2 dozen old roses, noisettes, teas, bourbons and DA's Graham Thomas. Crepescule for some reason and the bourbons, apart from Zepherine Drouhin struggled and gave up on a neglectful owner. The others gave me so much pleasure that even a 5 year drought which killed the rest didn't deter me and I replanted. I am now a dedicated rose lover and want to be able to pick roses every day for my rose bowl.
Janine, your idea of keeping all the rose tips from here is a good idea. I think I will open a new folder and call it Rose Tips! I can cut and paste from here.

Hi Everyone - this looks like a lovely forum, nice people. Does one become nice because of looking afer roses, or do only nice people choose to love roses?

Anyway, thanks for the tips about joining from frannyfrip and bigmamma2, as I was about to give up too. I rejoined with an entirely bogus US zipcode and state - chose 90210 in CA because that's the only one I can casually remember. Fairly inappropriate, as I live in the cold inland climate near Canberra. But it's good for growing roses and bulbs! Humidity isn't too much of a problem for me.

OK, well I just went through the same nightmare again, I used to be a member many years ago of these forums and had to do the same thing back then, I fluked it last time lol, this time I used the 90210 CA someone mentioned here, I sent them a complaint this time but dont think they care as it hasnt changed obviously in all those years since I was last a member, have had to open a new membership as my old email address I used is obsolete and I have forgotten most of my other details such as PW's ect. Sadly a lot of people wont become members because of this problem as registering is so difficult.

I joined only recently & had the same trouble. I just put numbers randomly plucked from the air in the boxes that kept rejecting my real info. I was lucky that I guessed what the problem was straight away. There have been things in the past I've tried to do online that I have tied my brain in knots over & still failed. Hopefully anyone else wanting to join will see this thread & save themselves a headache.

I finally joined today. After numerous tries I found a "contact us" email address then found this posting. CA 90210 still works great and the answering email came about the same time. I am in Northern Tasmania and am planning a new rose garden with standard, bush and florabundas so anticipate spending a lot of time on this forum. The idea of keeping notes in a word document is the way to go. I just have to get disciplined enought to keep some sort of order amongst the notes.
