I highly doubt its renanthera. Those are larger plants. That looks like Neofinetia falcata to me, or a hybrid thereof. It should grow just fine mounted since they are more tolerant of drying out than vandas. If you want to experiment with the vase, good luck to ya. Roots hitting the water shouldn't cause root rot. A trick people sometimes use is putting floral vials on root tips to help keep them hydrated, and I've personally heard stories of peoples vandas growing their roots down into their pool of all places! So yeah, shouldn't rot anything. As for the phal, unfortunately a spike coming from the center usually kills the phal because it originated from the apical meristem where leaves are supposed to come from. If you're lucky the plant will keiki off to the side, if you're willing to wait for it to grow. But it looks like your phal is a (eventual) gonner :(

google. where in the house does it live? It must be living in dry air. And that is why it is unhappy. You need to create an environment it likes or give it to someone that has the right environment. I live in South Florida and I don't grow orchids from the Himalayas and they can't grow orchids from the Everglades. With an effort you can make an artificial environment to survive or thrive depending on how well you do. I can't tell you how to build one. I never needed to. Because I don't have mountain top orchid either, living in low flat lands of Florida. I have been given orchids in the past that I had no chance in creating a culture that would work. I gave them to a grower thad had success and proper culture.

Robert Fuch is a leading expert on these plants, a breeder and AOS judge and current president and officer of American Orchid Society. He knows what he is talking about and his plants show it without being overpriced. He has won many awards and has a website RF Orchids. I don’t personally know him but I know what his plants look like. “WATER: Vandaceous orchids in slat baskets should be ­watered daily, preferably early in the morning. Give them a good drink with the hose, or a dunk in a bucket or sink if you only have a few plants, and let them dry. High daytime humidity is essential, especially on sunny days, and additional misting once or twice a day in bright weather will be helpful. On hot, sunny days around 80% humidity is appropriate. Water more sparingly in winter, during long cloudy spells, or after repotting. In any season, avoid watering plants late in the afternoon. Vandaceous plants should be dry before nightfall. FERTILIZING: Vandaceous orchids are heavy feeders. Once a week during the growing season, give the plants a solution of a complete, balanced fertilizer. High-nitrogen fertilizers will inhibit flowering and are not recommended for these ­orchids. All plants should be flushed thoroughly with plain water once a week to remove built-up salts. If you use an automatic proportioner, plants may be fertilized as often as daily with a more dilute solution. Whatever feeding plan you follow, remember, it is important to be faithful to the ­regimen you have ­established. We use Peter’s 20-20-20 (All Purpose with micronutrients; Jack’s Classic All-Purpose is packaged for consumer sales) fertilizer weekly during the growing season. During the winter (non-growing season), we apply the same proportions every two weeks rather than weekly. He has written a number of books and articles (including for the American Orchid Society) on growing Vanda (their specialty) in South Florida.

I actually had thrips on my vandals a few months ago. I found a way to get rid of them and now my vandals are flowering again. No, this is not thrips or any insect, because the bud is healthy looking. It just doesn’t grow. i am starting to feed it a fertilizer with a high phosphorus valium. Let’s see what happens.
