What is this small native tree?

I'm presuming this is native to Australia. Common street tree in Brisbane. Very long-flowering and varies in size. Many thanks.

Some sort of dogwood - Cornus drummondii, or Cornus racemosa, maybe. Cotinus obovatus is a native smoketree, but would get too big for your spot. Redbuds generally stay compact, and Cercis canadensis is definitely a local native. Bush honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera) is probably not big enough for what you have in mine. I am guessing that there has to be some sort of Holly or Viburnum that would do well in that type of situation as well.

Almost all trees have some sort of downside when placed near a pool! They all shed something (we have a pool too). Honestly, the berries on my Serviceberry never hit the ground. The birds adore them and they are quickly eaten - I swear some of them are eaten before they are fully ripe. How about Rhododendron canadense? Will that take full sun in Ontario? How about Hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel)? My fringetree doesn't fruit very heavily - if you get a male you won't have berries at all (not sure how you select a male, however, perhaps you just have to get lucky).

If you would like nitrogen-fixeing shrub native to New York: buffaloberry (Shepherdia spp.); go with Shepherdia argentea, as the berries are better tasting. Btw, most of the plants krazyaroider recommends are: non-native (to NY); invasive; and one is not even a nitrogen-fixer: redbud (that's a tricky one, since it is in the bean/legume family). If you'd like a tree that is nitrogen-fixing, choose a variety of native alder (Alnus spp.) Btw, keep in mind: buffaloberry is native to the midwest - AND TO NEW YORK - look up the distribution range maps (google: [the plant] + usda).. Rhus aromatica does not sucker as aggressively as some of the other sumacs. So, not a bad problem where they can grow into their ultimate 8ft width.... which agree is a tough fit on just about any sub/urban lot. We're using the 'gro-low' cultivar on a slightly sloped half-circle drive where they have space to get as wide as they want. We went with them because needed something xeric that could do well in both full sun and heavy shade. The ones in sun grow faster and show more fall color, but all appear healthy. In fact, am amazed at how much shade they can take. They are replacing a 6ft boxwood hedge that the PO planted too close to the drive. We planted four of the liners in coves trimmed into the east side of the boxwoods.... and the boxwoods are in the full canopy shade of a 30ft Chinese pistache. That was over three years ago; we'll finally be cutting the boxwoods down while the sumacs are dormant this winter. They are still little, but are fruiting and seem to have hit their stride from their tiny starts. Nice video, wish we had spots for several of the others. Actually it looks like Privet, which I think is NOT a native but certain species are declared weeds.
If I'm right then I would have to say that despite that, I have NEVER had a seedling come up in the yard in 20 years, and it has given much protection to ground and climbing plants, and birds, as well as shade in the hottest of summers.

It does look a bit like privet but I suspect I've got something very similar growing down the back, a native, but search as I have I seem to have misplaced the label and can't think of the name of it. I bought it after seeing a picture posted here by (I think) Mary-Ann some years ago. The flower
bud(s) opens to a small starry, yellow(ish) flower. I'll keep looking for the label, I know I've got it somewhere.

Hmmm, it does look like a privet now that I've looked it up. I had assumed it was planted by the Brisbane City Council. But perhaps not.

I think it is broad leaf privet which (I believe) was brought in as a street tree. It is a pest down the local golf course located in a valley because the seeds are spread by birds and it grows very rapidly given a bit of moisture.

I checked my tree/bush down the back and while the birds have again pinched my label, the leaves of my bush differ significantly from those in the pic. So, subject to the tree/bush bearing dark brown berries, I'll go arthurm that it's a broad-leaf privet.
