Hi Garden _worm I don't do paid work but I sure can understand your enthusiasm to having time off, and Autumn is the best time of the year to get those garden beds ready for all those winter crops, I finished planting all mine yesterday though I will plant more tomatoes in a couple of weeks as the ones I put in last month have heaps of apricot size fruit on them.

Actually I think Easter is a wonderful time to wind down a bit and enjoy precious time with family and friends lots of BBQ's before the weather gets too cool. My Birthday usually falls around Easter so there is always something special going on but this year I will be quite content to do nothing , I guess its a sign of old age creeping up faster than I want it too.

So over Easter I am going to "REST" and spend time playing with my favourite toy " MY CAMERA "

the last long weekend (labour day holiday over here a few weeks ago) it was too hot to do any gardening work so Ive been looking forward to getting some things done around the garden over easter. I want to get an area set aside for a proper vegie garden which means moving a heap of stored building materials and retaining the area which is on a slope, clear out all the weeds and getting a green manure crop in. the old asbestos fence really needs painting too and Id like to fence it off to keep the dogs out of the area. we probably wont get it all done but hopefully we'll get a good start on it.

I live in a tourist seaside area south of Melb. That means stay at home as much as possible, trafic, tourists everwhere, shops packed practically imposible to shop.

Best day is when they go home.

Rebecca and I are digging up our old driveway (now relocated) to make way for the new bamboo garden! The gravel is deep and hard packed and we found an old concrete path underneath part of it which was hard work removing. Once the digging is complete we can get a truckload of compost, plant the bamboos, mulch and build garden bed edging, probably with stone. Fun fun fun!

We are cutting back trees to let more sunshine in and than shredding the whole lot. A big job as we have two trees that need shaping and reducing. I might even get rid of one of them... a kaffir plum which just takes a loooot of space... and the kids and their partnes will come for lunch on Sunday... I just love April. Happy Easter and happy gardening :-).

What does one traditionally do at easter? Eat chocolate, groan because one has eaten too much chocolate, eat more chocolate, stagger out and do a cursory wander round the garden, come back in and eat more chocolate.

I have cement,sand,logs,sleepers,rocks,soil and fencing material and two weeks off work.

Over Easter - The usual pottering around the garden catching up on jobs that we don't have time for on Sundays. Have a heap of plants sitting in the shadehouse waiting patiently to be planted.

Over the school holidays - Going through the kids rooms, 1 per day, sorting out and getting rid of unused toys, clothes, etc and giving the rooms a spring (or should that be autumn) clean, wash walls, etc. One of my favourite jobs - not! Anyone want to help? :)

I hate housework I would rather be getting soil under my nails than cleaning a house anyday. We had 1200 old pavers given to us on Monday ( Hubby worked hard for them ) and we both stacked them twice. So Iam going to teach myself how to make a low wall for the new raised garden beds..I do ok with the pointing and the leveling its making the mud I am no good at. Sadly I can just hear this in the background "You are not doing it right" and one guess where the mud could land up....Cheers...MM.

Chocolate aside, mostly I will be weeding, transplanting and tidying up the garden in general. it has been too hot up until now to do much gardening except for early in the mornings, so I am looking forward to the cooler autumn weather. I must also get a pile of bark in to redo the paths between my garden beds. We just lifted the weedmat and all the well rooted weeds that had grown through it, and I will be putting thick layers of newspaper under the bark. instead of the weedmat.
Like GH, I will be Spring (er autumn) cleaning, having started on the huge job of tidying the second spare bedroom, and going through storage boxes that haven't been touched for some years. A few trips to the opshop post autumn no doubt.
We are taking a hard earnt and desperately needed luxury weekend at the Goldcoast this coming weekend, before easter. We have been promising ourselves this for 6 months, and it is instead of the much hoped for NZ trip which would have been 10 days worth - certainly something to lookforward to after 15 years without more than a long weekend break from work. Maybe we will manage that next Autumn :-)
So I guess you could say that the Gold Coast weekend is our real easter break. Whilst there we will be visiting relatives, walking on the beach, dining out, and greeting 3 new tiny additions to the family, a great nephew, and his 2 new little step cousins from 2 other families. What fun! :-)

I will be travelling to Brisbane over Easter for the National Brass Band Championships. I am associated with Capricornia Silver Band her in Rockhampton & they will be competing.

Garden Worm, the Band has a concert on this Sunday (2/4) at 2.00pm at the old City Cinema Centre in Denham Street. Well worth attending, spread the word to your friends.

Hi Darryl, I'm p/time from just north of Rocky. I'll go down from Mackay to do things next week probably, like to stay off the perfectly good road between Sarina and Marlborough where the tired travellers get into strife on these long weekends.

Bit laid up at the moment and hoping to be fit to tackle hedge removal (sick of it being prime whitefly habitat)and fixing up the floor of the little shadehouse for a start. Contemplating chooks....again.

Hi garden worm, Easter is the time for the great Easter Egg Hunt for the grandchildren. We've been doing this for years now. We hide the eggs in almost the same places every year and the "littlies" have the job of reading out the notes and leading the search. The older kids carry the baskets. We can't let the dogs out because they sniff out where the eggs are and they go ahead showing the kids where they are. It's all great fun and makes lovely memories. My veggie garden is in order but my roses badly need a little TLC. I think new mulch may be in order this year. :-( Barbara B

I will be pruning some perenials and then scraping off the pine bark mulch in my front garden then trying to improve the soil with cow manure, straw and cottage mulch before putting back on some of the bark. I went about it the wrong way I planted first and covered the garden in pine bark mulch, but didnt improve the soil. So now I am doing that one area at a time. We have clay soil on top of limestone so the soil needs all the improvement it can get.

I wont bore you with the weeding etc - just the new plantings. My friends from the Native Plants forum will be horrified, but I gave into a few urges I've been resisting for some time:

Ixora Williamsii
Camellia Japonica 'Edna Butler Pink'
Rhododendron Vireya
Several Cuphea underplantings
Cordyline Fruticosa (yet another ..)
Dwarf Melaleuca (Claret Tops and others)
3 new Crotons (Rio Carnivale, Carnival Clown and Carnival Gold)

Also managed a 3 metre Syzygium Australe for L's new block - a good buy at $50 from Fitzroy nurseries.

The Camellia and the Rhodo are a marked departure from my usual philosophy, as I dont believe in the need for pots (Camellia) or complex planting regimes (Rhodo), but I have been seduced by photos - a familiar story, I guess. I rationalised it by telliing myself that they make good companions for my very happy gardenias, and the nearby lillipillies dont seem to mind acidic soil either. Being able to move the Camellia will give it the best chance of survival in Rocky's harsh summer.

Anyway, its been great to get something accomplished over the break. I promise to get back to the native plantings next weekend :)
