What's to see in Brisbane?

We're going to Brisbane in late June. We are definitely going to both Botanical Gardens and Roma Street Park (I think it's called) and I'm hoping someone can suggest other worthwhile places to see while we're up there. We'll have 3 full days and 2 half days to fill. We don't want to have to go too far from the main part (we'll be staying in Wickham Terrace) so anywhere within walking distance or a short bus, train or taxi ride will be good. Thanks.

Donna South Bank is over the bridge with a man made beach there are gardens there too.
Take a ride on the City Cat up and down the river. Climb that bridge in the day for $100.

Hi Donna,

If you get the chance, hop on a train to Chelmer. It will take about 20 minutes to get there - walk towards the river (right hand side as you leave the station) until you reach Laurel Avenue. Environmentalists cringe at the trees, but they really give the street an 'old South' feel, and this is augmented by large blocks with big houses. Most of the gardens are a little too restrained for my personal tastes, but the overall feel is something special. The street is abut 300 metres long (from memory) and has been repeatedly given the gong for 'Brissie's best street'.

If you are feeling energetic, walk back over the bridge to Indooroopilly (next suburb) and see a movie at the 'Eldorado' (I assume its still there). It will cost about half wehat you'd pay at a multiplex, and the drinks etc are *normal prices*. All up, a fantastic afternoon for a very small outlay.

I see a few near the coast on google. I was told they were planted large fronting a nice and big Hotel. They have the "coconut juuuuust making it look" like what you see in the California desert. Interesting that those Coconuts had tall Howea palms next to them. But,yes,I would trade for the Brisbane climate. Ironic that here in the bay area we also have a city named Brisbane. Its a very cool ,mild climate..not Brisbane like in summer!

Which herbs for Brisbane Cottage Garden

All of the so-called Mediterranean herbs will do very well indeed. Don't worry about the humidity - they love it, despite what you've probably read! And they can also handle our summer downpours. That means lavender, any of the salvias, Winter Tarragon, basils, fennel, yarrow, dill, thymes, rosemary, savory, hyssop, patchouli and a whole bunch more. The best of living near Brisbane, is that you can also grow tropical herbs like ginger, lemongrass, galangal, cardamom, chillies (which add excellent colour when in fruit) etc. Just make sure you provide good drainage for all of them. The only herbs which don't do so well here are the cool-climate ones. I've have no luck keeping meadowsweet or sweet woodruff, for instance, and chamomile has to be kept well-shaded to survive. The mints do well in partial shade. But anise and coriander and rocket tend to bolt to seed in the blink of an eye - definitely only winter crops. Parsley prefers partial shade, chives will go anywhere. Bay does well, also things like curry plant and Curry Leaf Tree. I see plenty of roses around, but I have only a tiny tea-rose in my all herb/vege courtyard garden. Nasturtiums do brilliantly well, and can get out of control. Lemon verbena will lose its leaves in winter, but bounce back early in spring. Just remember that Brisbane is a BIG city, and the western suburbs are prone to frosts in winter. I'm lucky to be living close to the coast, so I get no frosts. But I lived for a short while not far from Ipswich, and my herbs all survived no problem.

here are three main botanical gardens in Brisbane. The Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens are worth a visit. The link is http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/facilities-recreation/parks-venues/parks/brisbane-botanic-gardens-mount-coot-tha If you are visiting you need a car or to organise to catch a bus there. Within the gardens you can follow a map for a self-guided tour or there are free organised tours with volunteers. I'll leave you to look around the website. Right in the city are The Roma Street Parklands which are quite pretty within a city landscape. Their website is http://www.romastreetparkland.com/Pages/default.aspx There are also the city parklands which I have not personally visited and I think may be more of a park than an actual arboretum. However it's right within the city and there is some information at http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/facilities-recreation/parks-venues/parks/city-botanic-gardens There is an Australian Open Garden Scheme and there may well be private gardens within the Brisbane range open to the public while you are visiting. g'day hedwig, your safe bets will be the brassicas, potatoes, onions, garlic & beans. deopending on the micro climate of your yard and how much sun it gets will determine how well those plants will go. there will be no carte-blanche list as such all list are suggestions as is all help given here and like has been said try it see how it goes that is the best way to work out what will work for you in your micro-climate. tomatoes and capsicums etc.,. will do well if you have a warm position with good sun they will of course take longer to mature over the shorter winter days that are coming. zucchini's pumpkins etc,.? if you have a well drained spot that gets almost maximum sun they could do ok but will take a long time to mature, the down side here is powdery mildew will be the big enemy. at present with night time temp's falling i would suggest buying seedlings as seeds may not germinate that well in the cooler medium. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

Thanks MM I have looked at that site already. Still haven't found anything that interests me AND my husband thats on at that time. I'll keep looking at it though as they update it.
Thanks artiew, thats sounds like a nice day out, though I'll give the movie a miss. I don't want to be indoors if I can help it.

Hi Doona

How about hopping on a train to Caboolture (about 40 mins on an express)and see the gardens around The Lakes. They've put a lot of work into them over the last several years and they are looking really good.

In Bris itself, a walk along the river is good value; I think you can get onto the riverwalk from the Botanic Garden, but definately from anywhere along Eagle St.

I must agree there is a big heap of stuff to do in Brisbane
a well worth trip for people of all interest .................

if you have the time, hire a car and take a day trip to Binna Burra or Springbrook for a look at Queensland's subtropical rainforest.
