Visiting gardens in Brisbane

Hi, I will be visiting Brisbane in November and wonder whether this is a good time for garden tours and also up there are public gardens in the vicinity that I should see. I have previously visited the Botanical gardens in Sydney and Melbourne and also Wendy Whiteley's garden in Sydney. Loved them all. Thanks very much in advance.

here are three main botanical gardens in Brisbane.

The Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens are worth a visit. The link is

If you are visiting you need a car or to organise to catch a bus there. Within the gardens you can follow a map for a self-guided tour or there are free organised tours with volunteers. I'll leave you to look around the website.

Right in the city are The Roma Street Parklands which are quite pretty within a city landscape.

There are also the city parklands which I have not personally visited and I think may be more of a park than an actual arboretum. However it's right within the city and there is some information at

There is an Australian Open Garden Scheme and there may well be private gardens within the Brisbane range open to the public while you are visiting. You would need to check back with the website a little closer to your visit for more current information.

If you have an interest in Native Plants, the GA Perimeter College/Decatur Campus has a Native Plant Botanical Garden that is open to the public. Don't know if they have a guide available during weekends, but every plant is labeled, so a self directed tour is possible. The garden is accessible from the Panthersville Rd parking area, just beyond the Campus buildings. On the website below, click on Directions for map and driving directios from I-285. Enjoy your trip! I sure hope they did, although the Botanic Gardens aren't close to downtown. Millennium Park has some very nice plantings too. Boy these boards are slow lately!

You should go to Hampton Park.Also walk around downtown and look into yards and talk to whoever is working in them. Sometimes they invite you in.You can e-mail me directly and I will give you my phone # and you can come and see our garden. Not to much now a little early in the season. If staying a little might be able to talk to some people about seeing some more

Ian and Judy how lovely to see your garden. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have snakes and lizards just roaming in your garden. They were really nice. They certainly wouldn't survive this 'cold cloudy' climate. I think you have done so well especially with your fruit and veg. I love my flowers and pond, but I do think every now and then that I should put in a little veg plot somewhere. Maybe I will put a few things in large pots first and see how I go.
