Thanks so much all! Michelle, that daylily in photo #4 is called 'Purely'. It's supposed to be a rebloomer but has never done so for me except for the first year I had it. It is a perfect companion plant for that 'Tarragona' lily though. Eden, thanks so much glad you were able to find the time to look through this. Sadly they are all gone now. Summer must be winding down. Anita, I'm of the opinion that one just can't have too many lilies. Thanks again all Deanne

ken, we move them to screeened porch for winter. spazzy, you are so lucky if that works for you but you are z. 7; can't you leave out pots w/ soil in them in your winters? Here in z.5 new eng.- all i've leaned says i can't do that, with or without soil in the pots. we have had other empty pots- cement or cement compounds, raised off the ground- crack- even when turned upside down or when covered with a board and a heavy plastic cover. any z. 5ers out there who have successfully overwintered glazed pots out in the open? thnx much, mindy

I have had in the past an Easter lily, Oriental lily, and other colored Calla lilies. Needless to say it all ended tragically. With the heat in Houston and the humidity it has taken the life of many of my green "friends" and Ive not had much success obviously until my hubby bought me another beautiful Calla lily (white) about 3 years ago. Obviously it got special attention so the only claim to success is through loving my husband which made it special; which in turn brought it lots of special treatment! It has grown like a weed since and puts out large beautiful green leaves and stalks but it has never actually bloomed that I have witnessed. I have waited patiently for it to start flowering again and aside from the flowers it came with it is just now leaves. Is there some reason that its not blooming? Is there something wrong with it? Am I doing something wrong? I love it because not only is it my favorite flower but it was a wedding/birthday gift so its sentimental too! Currently it is inside a big beautiful oriental fish bowl (its actually a flowerpot but shaped as a fish bowl). There is no drainage and it is watered enough for the soil to be moist but not enough for root rot. It sits in the shade outside not exposed to extreme light. I am desperate to get it blooming after its been basically in a coma for 2 years! What can I do??

In general, The best time to plant lilies is in the Fall, the second best is in the spring, anytime in winter is OK if you can hack the ground up, but the summer is getting dicey. It gets more dicely the colder the zone since they've lost their spring growing and confront an early winter. Now, if they're cheap enough it's worth the gamble. What you definitely DON'T want to do is buy them and hold them. Lily bulbs never go truly dormant - and these have probably been out of refrigeration for awhile anyways. If you buy them now put them in the ground immediately so they get as much growing season as possible to produce leaves and photosynthesize for awhile to build up the bulb before they go dormant for the winter. To make things even better remove any flower buds that form so all the plant energy can go into the bulb. Late planted bulbs have artificially late bloom and late blooming lilies don't do as well in cold zones. They'll "reset" next year and bloom on time. -Helen
