Sick frangipani

Hello. First time poster here - I hope I'm in the right place.

I live in Sydney and have a frangipani in my garden. It was planted as a 2m tree about 3-4 years ago and has done very well. Beautiful tri-coloured flowers that fade as they age. It's in free-draining soil. My garden is on a sandstone rock-step (if that's a proper term).

Recently I noticed three patches of what look like rot on the central stem. They're not at the ends but on old wood. THe wood is softish and there is a discharge of something that resembles vasoline. In one of the patches the wood has opened up to reveal what I assume is the heartwood.

My hunch is that the whole section of trunk will need to be cut back and sprayed with fungicide, but that will mean the loss of a large proportion of the tree, and will unbalance it, so I want to be sure such draconian measures are necessary.

And help/suggestions would be most gratefully received.

The most common cause of frangipanis dying is by rot. If a potted frangipani plant is watered too much or too often (especially in cooler weather), the soil will remain wet and the stem may start to rot at the base. This known as "wet feet". The rot will travel up the stem and probably end up killing the whole plant. Sometimes rot can start on a branch. Rot can be found in a stem or branch by noticing that it is more wrinkled, soft or black inside. Softness can be checked by squeezing the branch. Piercing a branch or stem will show if the inside contains sap. If the plant is healthy the white liquid will start to flow out and the cut will heal naturally, similar to when an animal or person has a cut and the blood clots.if the stem becomes wrinkled the tree is not well Â¡V cease watering and spray leaves with AntiRot. If you notice spongy stems, remove the stem completely to the junction with a main branch. Thinning out 15 to 20 per cent of the canopy of your mature frangipani is good to do every few years; it opens up the branches, allows light in and reduces stem rot.

The best way to care for potted frangipanis is to place them in a location where they get plenty of sunshine. Test the dampness of the soil by poking a finger a few centimetres into the soil. if the soil is dry and the temperature is warm, then give a good watering. It is best not to keep the soil damp continuously so allow the roots to dry out between waterings.
If your frangipani plant is getting sufficient sunshine every day, no amount of water at one time will harm it. However, if you water it everyday and keep the soil moist continuously, your love will surely harm it.

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! that was my worse fear that I'd cut up a perfectly good plant, but yeah it was squishy, I did the pin thing and stuck it in at 1 inch intervals, it only ran white near the top which has now been dunked in rooting hormone and is in a pearlite mix on top of a radiator. When i stuck the pin in, I thought it was squishy in the middle cause there was some resistence from the outside but felt really soft in the middle. Thanks ever so much for sorting my pics out dave. Hi Marnie...I too have terrible rust on my plants where last year only the pink one had it, this year the red is covered with it also the pink and white though the fruit salad one is ok that one is in the sun all day, what surprised me was the new yellow one I bought mid January only 60 cms tall and with its first bud also has the same problem its in sun most of the day also with not much around it.. Have a look at the link below it more or less states the same thing as ..My book "What garden pest or disease is that" it gives this Organic control method for rust problems on other plants...The prompt removal of the first infected leaves may solve the problem.. phalanx_viridis Thanks for the reply :) It did start out very healthy indeed, I like your thoughts on experiencing s/s of iron chlorosis which lead me to research on the subject. I thought that looked just like it but the new leaves are affected first, all my new growth is dark green. Which leads to lack of nitrogen being the possible cause as it shows first in older leaves just like mine. So far what I've found out - the Ph test kit said to test at surface and lower down in the root ball so I dug down the side of the container 1st thing I found was I did not like the mix I was digging out as it had no texture, no structure and just was very fine powdery rubbish!! Next came the 2nd Ph test and at the bottom it was 4.5 "Acidic" and I even re-tested with the same result. I have gone for drastic measures and removed my plant from it's container and scrubbed it clean and let it soak full of clean water and then (I know you should not) remove the mix from the roots but 1 it was to high in Acidity and no way where the roots getting any oxygen and 2 it was hard packed and took me hours washing it out with the hose. The container has 3 big drainage holes in it and sits on 2 house bricks and now if full of Osmocote® Professional - Multi Purpose Potting Mix :) All I can do now I guess is see what happens!
