Actually I have 3 now. 2 more came today. I have a Sweetcrisp, and the other 2 are a Patriot and I'm ashamed to admit it....yes...a KaBluey from Gurneys. I had a $50 credit from Gurneys, figured 'what the heck' and decided to use it. I found out that the KaBluey, even though the name is silly, is A-257 selected at the University of Arkansas, so I'm optimistic that it will do well. I just took a look at the roots of each. The KaBluey looks healthy but was so root bound that the roots were a solid mass of very fine hairs. The plant looked like it came out of a pot 4" wide and about 10" deep. I had had to loosen up the mass of roots a little and chunks of the stuff came off in my hand. I'm assuming that's a good thing. I reduced the mass of roots to about 1/2. I've got them soaking in water now and will go back out and pot them in a little while. It's amazing how few real looking roots there are on a small blueberry bush.

The Lowes here had the best looking plants for sale, They were well established (looks-wise) multiple branches, looked about 4 times bigger than the bare root plants I ordered from a local blueberry grower here. If memory serves, they were $10 each. And if I had not purchased so many other plants already (most of what I bought I bought for resale), they would have seemed very worth trying. Again, just the size difference from what you normally see for sale and these (normally you see ones that look like one smaller than a pencil branch maybe with a few lateral branches, but very puny) was pretty significant.

franktank, there's no way those containers are going to be big enough. You'll definitely need to replant. just me, I don't grow blueberries in containers, but I'll try to answer your questions anyway. 1. Should I have bought two of this particular variety for better pollination? Two of the same variety will not increase pollination. With some varieties (more so on Southern Highbush and Rabbiteye) you may get better pollination with two different varieties, but the jury's really still out on that one. Two different varieties certainly isn't necessary for good fruit set. Also, if you do have two varieties, you'll need to make sure the bloom time overlaps. 2. What size container would be good for a Blue Jay blueberry plant? The bigger the better, most likely. 3. Is a plastic pot okay? Should be. 4. I live in Zone 6. Will the plant(s) be okay in the winter if I'm growing in a container? Probably not, given the temperature difference between soil in a pot and the soil in the ground. I'm afraid that would kill the roots. They'd be ok in an unheated garage. 5. I'm short of 'full sun' areas in my yard. How would this plant do in dappled shade? You won't get as much fruit as you would in full sun. Give them as much as possible. 6. Any suggestions for another variety I can grow so my berry harvest will be staggered? (a variety that would be good to eat right off the bush Fall Creek nursery has a great website with variety descriptions. Take a look there (just google it) for tons of info.

I stack the big ones up along the side of the garage, which is out of the way and doesn't mar my view of anything. The smaller ones are rinsed out and stored in a big plastic container inside the garage. I use them for various purposes - winter-sowing, spring sowing, over-wintering plants in the garage (this past winter I had approx. 40 containers of various sizes in the garage), plant swaps or giveaways, plant sales, and when I move from the current house I hope to bring LOTS of plants with me.
