WV: I'm growing BB in 15 gal pots. That size is good. With a light, well-draining mix the pot is not too heavy to move. My plants have gotten about 3ft tall and that wide. Enough for about 5 lb of berries. Next yr I need to prune mine more before bloom to limit the crop load. Eating quality suffers if there is too much fruit. A plastic pot is OK if it will last long enough. Mine are the black nursery pots. They last a long time.

A good nursery can recommend another variety with staggered harvest and for cross pollination. Mine produce fine without pollination, yours might need it. The plants need as much sun as possible. You'll just have to try your situation and see how it works.

I grow 2 Bluecrops in containers. I plan on repotting after this summer. Do you really need to go that big (15gallon)??? Hmmm... I'll see what i can dig up for large containers. Maybe i'll repot sooner?

franktank, there's no way those containers are going to be big enough. You'll definitely need to replant.

just me, I don't grow blueberries in containers, but I'll try to answer your questions anyway.
1. Should I have bought two of this particular variety for better pollination?
Two of the same variety will not increase pollination. With some varieties (more so on Southern Highbush and Rabbiteye) you may get better pollination with two different varieties, but the jury's really still out on that one. Two different varieties certainly isn't necessary for good fruit set. Also, if you do have two varieties, you'll need to make sure the bloom time overlaps.
2. What size container would be good for a Blue Jay blueberry plant?
The bigger the better, most likely.
3. Is a plastic pot okay?
Should be.
4. I live in Zone 6. Will the plant(s) be okay in the winter if I'm growing in a container?
Probably not, given the temperature difference between soil in a pot and the soil in the ground. I'm afraid that would kill the roots. They'd be ok in an unheated garage.
5. I'm short of 'full sun' areas in my yard. How would this plant do in dappled shade?
You won't get as much fruit as you would in full sun. Give them as much as possible.

I'm in zone 5 and northern highbush blues don't freeze out in containers. I don't do anything special at all, just let them sit out in the open. A rule of thumb for containers is that plants are hardy to one less zone. Bluejay is considered hardy to zone 4, so in a container it should be hardy to zone 5. You should fine in zone 6.

My berries said they wanted full sun too. In the beginning they got about half a day. Then I moved plants around to give them better sun, and they stopped growing. Back to their original spot, and they're growing again. So as long as they're getting some sun, I wouldn't worry about it!

I replanted one of my blueberries in a 14inch pot...must be around 5 gallons. I noticed that the roots went about halfway down, but were all the way out to the sides. I had read that blueberries have shallow roots, so it might make more sense to find a wider container?

franktank, sorry, I didn't mean you needed to replant immediately. I meant that over time, that container won't be big enough for you to sustain a blueberry plant of a decent size.

My six blueberry plants are all in 15 gallon, "squat" pots, except the smaller Sunshine Blue. They get morning sun, afternoon shade. They don't taste as sweet this year as they did last year, when they were in a sunnier location. Perhaps they need more sun to "sweeten up", don't ripen as well in the shade.
