Zygo Cactus - Leaves turning Red

Hi all,

This is my first post so please bear with me.

I have a number of Zygo Cactii which live in a covered area outside. The roof is made of a clearish type of plastic sheet which gives 75% light. There are walls on 2&3/4 sides but the other side opens into a carport and the other little bit which is open is to the outside.

Some of the Zygo Cactus have leaves which are turning red.

One cactus in particular turned very red and then the leaves started to shrivel and the cactus eventually died. Another one is approaching this stage and if possible I would like to save it.

I have tried extra water. - Less water - moving to different spots - all to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated

Turning red suggests heat and/or water stress. The plant may have lost its roots through overwatering; tip it out of the pot to see if it has any. If not then you will need to reroot it. Check your potting mix to ensure that it drains freely and does not stay wet for a long time. The mix should contain components such as charcoal or vermiculite that act as reservoirs of moisture without excluding air from the root zone. (Some growers use kitty litter, the heat treated clay variety, for this purpose).

As GermanStar said, it might be a sign of stress. I found one site that says Disocactus ramulosus turns red in high light. See link below. A new shoot on my Epiphyllum is all bright red...but it is definitely stressed. :P Here is a link that might be useful: Disocactus ramulosus

Hey Beth. Great idea for a thread! I've been so swamped I don't really have time to take any serious pictures but I loved your theme so much I snapped some quick (embarrassingly) sloppy shots. The green indicates your using and applying good watering I tend to think the red indicates that it may be just a little to warm outside for it this time of the year. Not to suggest you would want to move it but if so and want a suggestion I sit mine inside at a S X SE window behind a apx 30% UV sun filter screen for early morning sun. It sits in the open window area until early Spet then is bought outside for flowering initiation. Note: there is a four zone difference between here and there.

Showing a bit of stress, nothing out of the ordinary. However, here are some hard truths The flowers on the companion cacti...they are glued on. Fake, if you will. Removing them...may damage the cacti. Maybe with a hair dryer. They also dont like sharing the pot. They need a lot less water than the aloe vera. Also, a lot more light... The other aloe also grows faster and larger than the vera, if given right conditions. The red one , the gymnocalycium mihanovichii, hibotan(aka moon cactus), is grafted. The stocks or the plants have a tendency to rot, irregardless of conditions.
