I have a similar problem... am a newbie gardner so please forgive some of my incorrect comments if any... My guy told me that the buds form in the fall for the next spring...because we had a harsh winter the buds were damaged and didn't continue the formation (growth) process in the spring. Recommended solution: wait until weather is warm, test for dead branches (scratch green test) and trim away dead branches...then wait to see if it recovers. Its a shame to see such a beautiful tree in rough shape but patience and trimming seems to be the answer

How deep is the mulch? And is water/rain getting through it to the roots? Perhaps dig up one plant to see what's going on underground. Oh yes, dahlias blacken if damaged by cold. Have you had colder than usual temps? As for the holes, finding out just what is chewing requires a bit of detective work. Look during the day, also at night, say about 10 pm or so. Be certain to investigate the undersides of the leaves as well as the tops.

What a lovely home with a fantastic view. Thanks for thinking of us and share pics. Karen, you are right--I love to come see family, but this humidity is just zapping the little energy I have. And it doesn't really cool off much in the evening or even early morning. Been trying to walk my dogs in the early AM before the sun really gets up, but unless there is a breeze, it is not comfortable. Can only sit outside for a few minutes, then have to head back inside where it is air conditioned. I do love seeing all the green it produces though. ;o) Kathleen, bet your crab dip is yummy.
