That 2011 picture I had posted showed that beautiful 'Strict Weeping'. The main trunk has died. Now 5 years later the little then 2 1/2 ft parallel 'trunk', seen in the left of that 2011 picture, has become 5 ft and is healthy and bushier. It comes out of the stub of the dead 'Strict Weeping' trunk at soil level. So that might be root stock, But since I planted it at a corner of the house in the back, I simply let it grow. It looks nice, but not that towering 'Strict Weeping' I had bought. In the front of my house I have a 30 ft healthy Cupressus nootkatensis 'Pendula', so these type trees can live in my yard successfully. I still have a Cupressus nootkatensis 'Van den Akker', but it stalled at about 5 1/2 ft and is healthy. I had problems with 'Van den Akker', with the first one the nursery telling me they had a production problem. So I hope for the future, it should grow 1 ft a year. This one is healthy, seems to like its place and neighbors, and I leave it there.

There isn't a "them" because there isn't just one 'Pendula'. It is true that the blue weeping doesn't seem to be very blue. But then, is the blue weeping I have seen the only clone, or are there also multiple clones of that cultivar as well, some bluer than others?

I have one with the 'stretched-out arms', your first picture, is called Cupressus nootkatensis 'Pendula'. It is about 25 ft tall and grows well. I have also one of the very slim types, is Cupressus nootkatensis 'Van den Akker', is only 6 ft and looks OK, but is growing only very slowly. Another slim one with the name Cupressus nootkatensis 'Strict Weeping' lost its top possibly at its graft the first year and is growing very slowly from its base, but still looks interesting. I thought my zone 5 is too cold, but published limit is -30 F, so who knows. I have none of the round compact ones, but why would you have one of those when you can have one like your picture #1 shows? Bernd

These should all be expected to produce large trees, and the Van Den Akker clone of 'Pendula'* doesn't stay particularly narrow. *Grown and sold by Van Den Akker merely as 'Pendula', with the name 'Pendula' having been used for probably at least several different cultivars over the years - independent introductions of decorative plants all being put on the market at different times under a single familiar and commercially proven name happens rather often. Especially when that name has been in use for a long time - material offered as 'Pendula' Nootka cypress for instance was being offered in North America by 1907 - it can become impossible to tell which, if any of the versions present is the original
