Sansevieria, Gasteria, Aloe etc wanted.

G'day all - nice to find a cacti forum on here particularly catering to Aussies.

I have had a smattering of cacti and succulents around the garden for years now (not a huge collection and nothing too special) and have recently discovered the world of Sansevieria and Gasteria. My local nurseries don't have much to offer so I was wondering if anyone on here might have some Sans, Gasteria or Aloes they'd be interested in selling (or trading but as I say I don't have a big collection as yet.)

Would be great to hear from other Sans/Gast/Aloe collectors and Im looking forward to learning lots from the forum.

Also go to the Aloe Aloe website (Google it) I have been lucky enough to get some and they are flowering now... the miniatures are just beautiful - Gemini I just love!

mt apologies for the slow reply (havent been on here for ages)

Ive managed to add a few Sans (mostly unnamed) to the collection as well as a couple more Aloes but will be keen to get some more newies - particularly as the weather improves. If you have any Sans in particular youd be interested in trading/selling please feel free to msge me through here.

Had a quick look at the aloe site - cheers - but will have to have a better look through.

I noticed your in Vic as well - Im in Swan Hill (Nth West Vic).

I'm interested and fairly new to Gasterias and Haworthias. Looking for any Gasterias with short leaves or smaller in size such as: Gasteria bicolor liliputana, etc. And also Haworthias with translucent leaves such as: H cooperi and H. retusa. I have some seeds (please see my trade list) and plants to offer: * Aloe hybrid: X Alworthia 'black gem' (well established plants with small offsets) about 3-5 inches across, height: under 5 inches. * Crassula Ovata 'hobbit' (larger leaves), about 5-6 inches tall. You might consider seeking out the dwarfer growing Senecio serpens in lieu of S. mandraliscae, which can tend to sprawl and/or get leggy with too much shade; same blue foliage effect. I'd agree that Aloe maculata/saponaria is an ideal Aloe for more shaded conditions, but be aware that this is a fast clumper and may be more vigorous than you desire. Aloe striata, by comparison remains a single rosette. Your inland location probably means that the shaded conditions will not be as averse as they would be further north here in the San Francisco Bay Area, where succulents can even rot out with too much shade in winter if it is particularly wet that winter. A nice thorny plant that actually thrives in shade might include Colletia hystrix rosea, which to my mind combines well with succulents, and can introduce a nice linear quality as an upright accent. Furcraea species have a similar look to Agaves, and also have that thorny edge to the leaves while also doing better with less than full sun. Agave guiengola is another larger growing Agave that tolerates shade well. Check out the Agave bracteosa as well, and there is a very cute new variegated cultivar of A. bracteosa called 'Monterrey Frost' available from San Marcos Growers or Tony Avent's Plant Delights Nursery back in North Carolina. Echeveria agavoides also does well in shaded conditions.

Oh, just wanted to say I've found about 100 different succulent species (which is a surprising variety) at my local greenhouses, nurseries, and garden centers in Toronto, Canada. Some times you have to check fairly often to get when the new shipments come in. Of these, there were at least 10 different Haworthia species and 6 different Gasteria. Depending exactly how much light you have, you can also look into the following: Schlumbergera Epiphyllum Rhipsalis Huernia Duvalia Gasteraloes Aloes (some) Stomatium (not sure how low these go)

I have about 4 pots extremely full of hahnii Gold Hahnii. Due to loosing them by misshapes I was afraid to part with them. Same with Gold Flame. Come spring I have to part with most of them. Same with some odd balls I have laying around that don't excite me. I once collected just to have several different kinds but now I don't want to own them. I still see some I must have and no room. Time to take stock with my collection.

Kriten if you ever then go along the Murray Valley Highway as far as Strathmerton, make sure you go to Cactus Country, be prapred to psend at least three hours there, and see how many times you just say - WOW!
My parents live in Berrigan so I cross the river at Cobram.
I just can't help it, Cactus Country is a magnet to me..

I might have a spare Aloe africana if you want it and you are willing to pay postage on it. :-) Only a mature seedling about 8cm high.

I have quite a collection of Gasterias of all shapes and sizes, most of which have offsets if you are interested. They are not labelled though.
