not enough variety :(

hi guys,

i need some of you Brisbane people to help me out.

im finding that all of the brisbane nurseries that ive been to have much of the same cacti and succulents. theres no unusual or intersting stuff on the market.

so my question to you brisbane folk is what nurseries/markets/growers do you go to for your C & S.

im willing to drive outside of Brisbane if you know of any really good places.

what i think Brisbane needs is its own cactus nursery

"Glad that you mentioned your experience with Fantasia. You are so right that the info can be conflicting." Mamuang, I can see my post was a bit confusing. I'm trialing about 10 different cultivars, but none them have fruited yet. I was always a bit hesitant to try nects because I'd seen and heard how difficult they are to grow commercially around here. I finally decided to put some in after hearing all the positive comments about flavor on this forum. Quite a few of mine will be in their third leaf this summer. Even so they are too young to experience bac. spot. I rarely see it on peach leaves until the trees are old enough to start fruiting. It gets worse with age as the foliage gets more dense and leaves/fruit are slower to dry out from rain/dew. My comments about Fantasia and Honey Blaze are strictly from bac. spot susc./res. lists put together by people who are supposed to know what they are doing. For example Fantasia is rated as medium to highly susceptible by the NJ list Scott linked. Honey Blaze is rated as highly susc. I got both of these varieties from Adams and they rated them much more favorably (which at the time was why I bought them). I've since read other sources which rate those two cultivars poorly in terms of bac. spot resistance, so I'm inclined to believe Adams is somewhat overly optimistic when it comes to some of the bac. spot ratings. Or maybe it's simply not much of a problem in PA.

Hollies, junipers, dwarf alberta spruce, arborvitae etc. IME too commonly arborvitae stop being pruned for a while, then in a few years you have a green monster threatening to swallow your home and rotting the sides and roof. And speaking of repetitive landscapes, how many places do you go where you can't swing a dead cat without impaling it on a dwarf AB spruce?! Now that we are re-set for the OP, the new request is: I am now just looking for a small tree 15-20 feet x 10-12 feet that is ornamental. That's super, but a 10ft spread will still have a chance at brushing the house, compromising the integrity of the siding by mechanical action AND shading which fosters algal growth. Let us think about things like the teddy bear magnolia suggested above - moved out a bit - certain osmanthus, columnar juniper (that can take that climate), Camellia sasanqua (moved out a bit), that sort of thing? Hi, In my experience, it generally takes between 6 and 8 weeks. It does seem that certain varieties develop faster, but not too much. Yes, optimal conditions speed up the process and will make them flower closer to 6 weeks than 8. Plenty of sun, water and fertilizer and especially keeping warm at all times are the key to rapid development. Good luck, Ton7

John: Just want to add that my young Keitt held mangos for months, so i'm looking at it as the ultimate late season stretcher. I picked the first one in late aug. (hard green) and ate it in Sept., then picked the last one (hard + green) in early November and ate it on Thanksgiving, and I think it would still be on the tree today or perhaps ripening enough for a Christmas taste if I hadn't picked it. I'm in SoCal so could behave a little different for you in Florida. Just planted a Kent last month as I heard that is late season too, but this Keitt got me seasonally very excited! mangomastiff

Hi Beck, You should join the Qld Cactus & Succulent Soc. It will put you in touch with many specialist growers. Among the members you will find gowers of many rare and wonderful plants. Try Regards Didge Rowe

Theres an echeveria grower who I have seen at Mt. Tamborine sportsground markets don't know if they go there all the time, there is another cacti grower there most times the markets are open (2nd sunday each month)

There are a couple of good stalls at the Caboolture Markets, have picked up some quite different varietes, also a good stall a Rocklea (good for pachypodiums and cacti), desert roses there is a family in brisbane that goes to at least a couple of the markets and have a great variety. I usually have a chat to see what else they have and when they can bring them along.

Yes I agree the Rocklea ones are very good, but I find the caboolture markets better due to more plant stalls and no matter how early I get there it is always packed.

zillmere salvation army markets first saturday of every month has a cacti & succulent stall,theres a cacti and succulent grower at camp hill (email for number if needed)
