g'day, i've just acquired a pineapple sage plant, and although the smell is great, and it's a nice looking plant and all, are there any useful purposes for this?. is there any secret sage business going on i should know about?, or should i just sit back and enjoy*bliss*

Yummy in salads, flowers too. They're a lovely red by the way.

Use the fresh leaves too add an interesting flavour to teas, fruit drinks, fruit dishes and salads. Use the sweet flowers as an edible garnish, in salads, sandwiches and desserts. Batter leaves, fry and serve with cream. Good with chicken, cheese and in jams. Thread leaves between meat and mushrooms, onions or capsicum on kebabs.

Shouldn't my pineapple sage be blooming by now?

I'm thinking mine isn't getting enough sun but it was the one spot that gets adequate moisture in a dry bed. With any luck(weather)it will bloom before frost. Hmm..just thinking , probably good it's not blooming because it's grown half across a stairway from the porch. The hummingbirds and carpenter bees will fight over the blooms I'm sure. And, I'm going to need to use a different door for a while (allergic to stings).

You might try lavatera (lavatera x. clementii or lavatera olbia). It grows great here in So. Calif. It has pretty light green leaves and pink, white, or lavender flowers and will grow into a large bush rather quickly. I had one that I loved but had to remove it to expand my patio. you have to watch it though because it will take over a space before you know it. Sounds like that's just what you're looking for though. Check out the url below for photos. Here is a link that might be useful: Lavatera Gallery

My poor dh is trying to prune mine back cuz they got so big while we were gone this past week...told him I'd prune him if he tries! The plants that got water everyday from the sprinkler/dripper system he installed went crazy and we now have a jungle!!! I can't wait til they bloom. If they get blooms on all the branches, I'll have tons! I'm sure it won't be in time for the hummer babies so I hope butterfly's like them too. glo
