HAVE: Pineapple Sage / Salvia elegans

This plant has grown for many years in my yard. It is currently about 6' tall (would probably be taller if I didn't keep it pruned a couple times a year). It has beautiful blooms pretty much all year round here in zone 9. Hummingbirds love this plant. I see them taking nectar nearly every day. And it's not just good for the hummingbirds! The leaves smell marvelous when crushed and make a great tea.

Harvested from my garden. I use only organic practices. I never employ the use of herbicides or pesticides. Due to the difficulty of harvesting sage seeds, they may contain some chaff. Seed packs will contain a minimum of 20 seeds.

And finally, here is some useful information from Wikipedia: The leaves and flowers of S. elegans are edible.The plant is extensively used in Mexican traditional medicine, especially for the treatment of anxiety, and also for lowering of blood pressure. Although scientific information about these medicinal properties is scarce, a preliminary study on mice found support for the plant potentially having antidepressant and antianxiety properties. Pineapple sage has also been shown to have a dose-dependent antihypertensive effect, attributed to its action as an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and inhibitor of the angiotensin converting enzyme.

I LOVE that plant! It does not stay alive long enough here to set seed, and I am sure it died with our extra-cold winter. I do not have much at all in the way of herbs or vegetables. However, if you can find anything interesting on my list, I am willing to send 3-4 of my items for just one pack of pineapple sage. (Or more for more packs.) Please let me know if you are interested....if I do not hear back, I will assume not interested (and I will understand). :)

Cuttings of pineapple sage root in about a week, depending on how fast the plant is growing. The stems that should be set in the sterile growing media (not water) should be both green and firm (not tip stems or covered with bark). The rooting medium should be soilless, like vermiculite, peat moss, or perlite. Do not cut it back until you see apical growth at least start and do not cut it flush to the ground. You can take cuttings as long as you leave half of the green working leaves on the bush, otherwise you will set the old plant back

Actually, Salvias are better companions for veggies than the other way around. Most Salvias are rabbit and deer resistant, and have few pests, unless they are rather stressed. You might want to grow some basil with your tomatoes. Pycnanthemums (mountain mints) attract braconid and other parasitic wasps of vegetable pests, including hornworms. Salvias will attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. You might want to get some of the small-flowered sages, since these will get you honeybees and your native bees, also good pollinators. You will also have to be careful which European sages to plant, since Salvia pratensis and S. sclarea may be on your state's invasive species list, as they are in Washington state. Pity.

I am in a warm 7b, and I keep Salvia elegans in pots. In pots the habit of Pineapple sage is to send out new shoots around the same time it blooms. So I like to keep the new shoots frost free. Lots of gardeners treat it as an annual, and some complain that the blooms are gone by early fall. Cuttings really root very easily.
