euphorbia trigona

How big does a euphorbia trigona get if it is planted in the ground? I have a pot with three small ones in it which are busting out all over, but don't want them to take over with their spines etc. and be a menace Would it be better to move them to a bigger pot. Also do they have flowers.

Hi -

I can't speak for QLD but in Sydney the biggest one I have ever seen was around 8' tall and 3' wide.

They don't seem to spread laterally so I don't think it would be a problem - this is certainly the case in the cooler climate of Sydney.

Sounds about right I would have said 2 meters which is pretty close.

It is E. t., and a nice one, too. If that is a valid name, it would be /should be listed as Euphorbia trigona v. (variety) rubra.

I'm not convinced that what you have is trigona. It doesn't have the same markings or growth habit. But with so many different cultivars out there, tracking down an id on yours might prove a challenge. I'm no Euphorbia expert, but I'll bet someone on here knows exactly what you have. You might try posting this in the Houseplant forum as well. I think you might get more responses that way, since Euphorbia isn't technically a cactus anyway. And the spots really look like sunburn to me, especially since you say that it was recently moved outside to full sun for a while. However, like I said, I'm no expert. I think your best bet is to repost this in the Houseplant forum. Good luck!

I purchased it from Bob Smoley a few years ago. I did purchase grandicornis but it rotted before being able to root. Bob told me to plant in pure perlite and not water for months. Which I have a hard time doing. Started to and was successful finally. I don't plant seeds of euphorbia. I do get some volunteers at times but they just come up on their own. 'Bikerdoc' is very good at seeds and from his own stock. One of the best men on this site. Very helpful and knowable.

i would repot if i were u, or stick them in the garden, no restrictions in there, and good drainage hopefully.
has anyone ever seen a red variety?

yeh i have a red one. the leaves especially are dark red, but the plant needs lots of loght or it turns green again or goes patchy

My brother in Melbourne has had a fantastic specimen growing inside near a sky-light for a few years. It has had no colour change at all - it's still purply red and 3 to 4 foot high.
Hope my cutting grows as well!
Any-one else tried growing a red trigona inside?
