Sources for tubestock?

Having recently purchased a 14 acre property with only 1 tree (on the verge) in Baldivis Western Australia, I am looking for some good sources to buy bulk tube stock of anything that will be suitable to plant onto our property. I would like to buy in advance so that little plants ( with small price tages) will be so much cheaper to buy and I will look after them, repotting to larger containers when needed, for the next year or so until we can have our house built and then can start planting.

do you have a local "greening australia" group? or council nursery? they may help at a reasonable cost

or even one of the Universities or horticultural colleges may help.

it takes time, but you can even collect your own local sed and grow your own tube stock??

Your local council should have a bushcare group, and they will help you plant out indigenous plants on your property. Worth a call to them at least.

Experimentation is fine if it is based on understanding the peculiar aspects of what ever plant we are dealing with. When it comes to Australian native Proteaceae plants there are unique considerations that need to be taken into account. Once we have an understanding of these characteristics then by all means we can take advantage of them. Experimenting blindly is not nearly as constructive. Australian Proteaceae plants are sensitive to Phosphorous to varying degrees. BUT it all makes sense if we are aware of what their original environment was. Proteaceae from the skeletal sandstone soils that have always been very low in nutrients, especially phosphorous, have over thousands of years, developed special adaptions known as proteiod roots. They are noticeably different. (I shall spare you further details about Proteiod roots, but a Google might give you more.) Plants developed these in order to maximise the surface root area so they can absorb the scarce nutrients that may be present in these sandstone derived soils. However in the more nutrient rich rainforest zones it is quite possible that Proteaceae are more tolerant of nutrients and maybe even Phosphorous. I always err on the side of avoiding common fertilisers with high rates of phosphorous. Even chook poo can cause problems, although I do give my rainforest plants a dose of Dynamic Lifter once a year. For example, I find Banksia ericifolia to be very sensitive while some Grevilleas are a bit more tolerant. As for your last remark Nathan I assume it is a joke. Anyone being wrong, should not inferr anyone is not wanted.

hi if you cant get from eden seeds( they are around $2.70 a pct of 9 seeds) i may have some seeds under my trees where the parrots have eaten the fruit, let me know if interested, i have found propagation from seed difficult and purchased both trees grafted and on original roots, they have grown slowly here, with a short growth spurt each year and thats it. the grafted trees were $50 dollars each and they are named varieties,but only 15 cm tall, and the fruit is twice the size of the bare rooted ones, , The grafted have grown the most but are still only around 4 foot tall. paul

Backhousia is very hard to grow from seed and there will not be any fresh from Australia till about March next year. I have bought it once from a commercial private seed supplier and it came un-cleaned - still in the calyx - I was disappointed to find how little actual seed, actually I gave up! However if you contact me direct (e-mail me through My Page") I may be able to help as I still have some seed but do not know how viable. Fingerlimes are readily available in Australia, but many of the other native microcitrus are protected and research going on into commercial use/production and information is not readily available. Also, citrus is citrus, a native species can be pollinated by a non-native species and so the seed is sterile or non-existant or un-reliable. Your best avenue is to check thoroughly with your quarantine department as to importing plant material to Singapore. Then whether by bud-stock or bare-rooted material - or any other form - you pr some traveller may be able to import legally, a living plant to Singapore. There are many suppliers here who sell tube-stock so long as they do not have the bother of exporting it.

I have this addiction too, I go out to pay the phone bill, and somehow find myself at the nursery instead. I only have a smallish yard, yet have bought nearly every species of Banksia imaginable, and Grevillea, and Callistemons, and more... I can't stop! Thankfully I live next to Kananook Reserve, where I can plant Banksia Integrifolia & Marginata to my heart's content. On the subject of Callistemons, I find that they really like the Sun too, and don't fare very spectacularly in the shade. Planted two Callistemon Citrinus tubestock in the same soil type, they are watered the same amount, yet one is in shade, and one gets good sun. The one in shade is healthy but languishing, yet the one in the "Hawaii" end of the garden is growing like a weed on steroids. Me no complain!

You are really better off to plant them in situ, rather than potting them up. They develop a much better root system that way and will be better plants for it.

Many wholesale nurseries will sell larger lots to the public. They just don't like selling smaller lots. No harm in asking anyway. Just check out the yellow pages.

Try Friends of King's Park, do a search on the net. They have sales of their plants, also try Curtin Uni. I bought tube stock natives for around 10-20c each. However it was a number of years back. But they will still be cheaper than nurseries. I agree with Dee, it is better to plant baby plants straight where they are to live.

I bought some tube stock of native grasses via mail order last year and they were pretty good - I've attached the site link below. I was quite happy with their quality. Another option is to see if there is a local native plant society in your area - they often propogate and sell tube stock at a really good price. Plus they will specialise in plants that really suit your local conditions.

There are a few places you can try - depends very much on quantity. I would suggest natives if you want something that will live ... try APACE nursery, which is a landcare nursery and not for profit (they are very friendly and one of their landscape designers can also provide services regarding landscaping, plant selection etc) - or Carramar Coastal nursery (closer to you).
