Australian Fingerlime

I am from Singapore and am a bonsai enthusiast. I've grown citrus plants like the Kumquats (Fortunella Meiwa and Hindsii) as bonsai successfully. I've been reading about the Australian Fingerlime (Microcitrus Australasica) or Microcitrus Glauca and am fascinated by such unique citrus plants. I would like to grow these as bonsais because I think they will make beautiful bonsais.

Does any QLD or NSW resident have such seeds? I can trade Camphor (Cinnamomum Camphora) seeds for them if necessary. I don't mind paying for them if need be.

It is very hard to move seeds into australia (and camphor laurel is a weed anyway :). Regarding out going seeds, you might do best to talk to a professional seed company such as nindethana.

Could you let me have nindethana's email or snailmail address so that I can communicate with the person. Better still a nursery who is prepared to sell a seedling.

I had a australian fingerlime but it did not like the humidity here and finally dwindled away. They are understory plants. Are you talking about the fingerlimes that are also red? I think it would be fun to try and create one. I have some Moro blood orange trees and a sanguinelli but they are still young. If I get another Aust. Fingerlime maybe I will try it.

Glenn, The rind is used and not the white pith in the center which is kinda dry and bitter like the white on the inside rind of an orange etc. I never found any seeds in mine either which is odd. I wonder how they could be hybridized. There must be occasional seeds sometimes? lol. People usually candy the rinds or make liquors. They also use the rind and make cookies, cakes etc. jurasico, Very nice etrog. I used to have one of those too but left it when I moved to FL. I would like to find another one. Sometimes I see the Buddah's Hand in the big box stores here but have never seen an Etrog Citron tree here in FL. There's a place that offer's the Australian Fingerlime tree once in a while. I used to have one of those but it froze in a gh mishap one winter. I would love to get a red fingerlime tree (goals :D) I have read in the Orient that people used them for air fresheners. They hang them in the doorway and give it a squeeze when they walk by lol. I might make liquor with mine for the holidays. Last year I gave the BH fruit away to a chef. ~Sjn

I am glad you can get cherries. Pumpkin pie is my favorite. Oh, I will definitely will be growing pumpkin if only if I can get hold of one...tons of seeds. You have Halloween, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin juice ( I usually buy that from my work. The best drink made of Apple cider, pumpkin puree and apricot ) and pies. Melissa don't tell my favorite mangoes, peanut butter, soy sauce, currents...your list is short but still it is important ones. I will be buying cans of food and pack a bag for a year or two Everytime I come back to States. I hope a store will open there. I will be talking to Chinese people who lives there or American. That's me...lol I ran into a few people here like Malaysians and Indonesian. I love their food. everytime I cook the food it doesn't make too spicy or different because the ingredients are not the same. So, when I ask how they cook ...they mostly get supplies overseas especially when they travel. Then I also discovered restaurant opens here a few and it is a treat to go and eat out. Closest cooking ever. Took me like 28 yrs or more living in FL. In California was not a problem Bec of so many Asians there with restauranst and chinatowns. In Florida is a lot of Vietnamese. So food is very different. Even a dark soy sauce which I am having a hard time. They will give me a duck sauce. So far I found only one dark sauce but the flavor is different. I can't find a different brand even on Amazon. The flavor differs tremendously. There is a dish called chicken roast cook with egg plants, tomorrow's, onions, garlic and ginger. But we used light sauce and dark to give a flavor and dark eat it with rice. That dish I cannot cook due to dark sauce. Even the light sauce is only Kikkoman here. There are better tasting light sauces around the world which put Kikkoman off the list. Now, I can get some spices like for satay but I am not picky. My brother's wife is very picky. She came from the mountains in India a place call Jammu . Jammu and Kashmir is located mostly in Himalayan mountains. She goes every year and buys the fresh spices and bring back. She don't like the spices here Bec they are not fresh at all and I meant as seeds even cardamom which is so, so green compare to the stores here. You can see the big difference . She will grind them all as what she needs to cook. Her cooking is fantastic and extremely delicious. All, I am saying is don't give up. You might find something there and never know of a store or something. I definitely did find a few places after I stop looking around for many years. jin

I have picked lots of citrus before they freeze. Our blood orange trees in So Cal and Phoenix AZ never had to have a freeze to pick the fruits. Sometimes we didnt get a freeze. Freezing in Phx meant the tiniest layer of ice on the dog's water dish lol. Not really freezing more like heavy frost lol. Blood oranges do develop deeper pigmentation with some cool nights and very warm days but dont literally need to freeze. We have warm days and cool nights here. Blood Orange trees arent that hardy, especially when young. So other than slight frost, they need protection. So yes, you can pick the fruit when its ripe, it might not be as "bloody colored" as if having more cool nights but color also depends on other factors as well. Different varieties of Blood Orange trees (Moro, Tarocco, Sanguinello etc) may have different coloring and do better in areas with varying degrees of cool nights, humidity, soils etc. I currently have a Moro Blood Orange and 3 Red Australian Fingerlimes which are a hybrid of blood orange and green Fingerlime, I believe. They are in pots in case we get into low 20'sF or heaven forbid the teens like in 2009. If it freezes they go in the gh. I had potted Sanguinello and Tarocco in AZ but left them with my mom when I moved out here. She gets decent color on them. She has them in the ground now.

No, that would be against the terms of gardenweb :-( Google is your friend. I doubt you'd be able to get a seedling through customs :-(

I seem to be hitting the wall. Nobody seems to have the seeds for sale. Can someone try to find them for me? I also tried Backhousia Citriodora (Lemon Myrtle) also without success. Ninethana sells Lemon Myrtle seeds in bulk @$44. Too much for me. All the nurseries contacted said they do no export plants overseas.

Anyone kind enough to source the seeds for me.

I had a quick check of the Singapore quarantine site - the Australian exporter would need to provide a phytosanitary certificate and the seed would need to be inspected by Singapore quarantine on arrival. It would be a bit of an exercise and relatively expensive.

The quarantine site is a little hard to navigate but if you head to the 'AVA plant health import requirements' part and click on the link 'Nursery stock, potted plants, seeds, mushroom spawn and tissue culture plantlets' you will get a PDF file which outlines the requirements.

Backhousia is very hard to grow from seed and there will not be any fresh from Australia till about March next year. I have bought it once from a commercial private seed supplier and it came un-cleaned - still in the calyx - I was disappointed to find how little actual seed, actually I gave up!
However if you contact me direct (e-mail me through My Page") I may be able to help as I still have some seed but do not know how viable.
Fingerlimes are readily available in Australia, but many of the other native microcitrus are protected and research going on into commercial use/production and information is not readily available. Also, citrus is citrus, a native species can be pollinated by a non-native species and so the seed is sterile or non-existant or un-reliable.
Your best avenue is to check thoroughly with your quarantine department as to importing plant material to Singapore. Then whether by bud-stock or bare-rooted material - or any other form - you pr some traveller may be able to import legally, a living plant to Singapore. There are many suppliers here who sell tube-stock so long as they do not have the bother of exporting it.
