I planted a two dimensional apple tree fence and I espaliered two pears against a brick wall. My wife calls it my ten year experiment. It's been 5 years and I'm still too new at this to give proper advice, but I'll note my watchouts. First the squirrels will get every apple, so it's more aesthetics that you are going for. I'm sure someone in your area will point to good nursery in your area, but you should definitely purchase disease resistant apples. In Atlanta, it's fireblight and cedar apple rust. buy trees that have the same growth habit. some apples are more aggressive, some are more 'spur' type, some are 'tip' bearing. How tall do you want the fence? I used a semi dwarfing root stock, M111 because I wanted a screen as well as apples. But most people will recommend dwarfing root stock. Buy 1 year old trees, 'whips'. they are cheaper there is much more selection and you'll be surprised how fast they grow. Plus it gives you some time to learn 'pruning'. The pear trees respond to espalier better, followed by apples. I've learned 'pears are for heirs'. it take more time for them to fruit. The apples, you'll have apples in your 3rd season. The 2 dimensional fence and espalier make it harder to protect from varmits. and if you are in the city you'll be limited on controls. I have to mention that the folks on this forum are brilliant, and you can learn a lot by reading the various Q&A. but I've learned the most by jumping in. I hope this helps. It's fun. .

Hope it has gotten better. I confronted her when the red Tailman apple @ the fruit show, [from her tree],..she said this isn't Trailman apple, Trailman is yellow, I said, well, this is from your tree named Trailman, all she said,..well, that's what can happen when you have unreliable help. That was the end of the story and never bought again.

I have growing in my yard, Dark Star, Halley's Comet, Physical Graffiti, American Beauty, Vietnamese Jaina (white), yellow, Condor, Cebra, Mega Red, and a couple of unknown white ones. Favorites are Dark Star, American Beauty, Halley's Comet, Cebra and some of the unknown whites. Cebra is a dark red flesh, one of the darkest. The juice would make a good natural food coloring (if you eat more than half a Cebra fruit, your pee will have a pink tint till it gets flushed thru your system). White ones are pretty bland, but I prefer the whites dehydrated (makes them sweeter). Most would suggest to get two different types in case one needs cross pollination (whites are good to use for cross pollinating). A friend of mine who has a 1 acre Dragon Fruit farm in Merritt Island grows Vietnamese Jaina, Natural Mystic and Vietnamese Red. All those are supposed to be self pollinating, but when they are flowering she is out there in the middle of the night helping them out. I help out mine when they are flowering also. There are a couple of good variety viewers with info, mattslandscape and PIN have one on their websites for starts. A 99 page Dragon Fruit thread can be found on the tropical fruit forum. Easy to grow from cuttings if you know somebody who has the type you want. I would avoid EBAY, to many stories of people thinking they bought a certain type, only to find out a few years later when it fruits that it is just a white type. Good luck.
