Is it possible to buy Kumara seed?

Or does one only find tubers for sale.

If available as seed, where can one buy it in NZ?

No seeds.
The tuber is put into a deep container and covered with sand/sawdust.
When the eyes sprout the runners grow 6-8inches long looking for the light they are cut from the mother tuber hardened up and planted.

I do something similar. Plant them under about 5cm soil under a plastic cloche (cold climate here at times) and once the runners have formed, break them off and set them out. Keep the water up to them. Will try growing some of them under plastic this year as they didn't grow very big last year.

I sowed a few seeds from 2 Sunfood goji berries (you can buy them from Whole Foods), I have 20+ that came up, gave quite a few away. Will let you know in 3 years if I get fruits from them. :-D I planted the Sunfood ones because they're so yummy from the bags. I also planted some from Horizon Herbs goji berries last year, I had a gazillion of them that came up also. Being a first time gardener, I had no idea what to expect. I left some outside in the winter and some in the garage, I thought the ones outside died since they were less than a year old, but they all came back. I put a few in a new raised bed I built and one in a pot and gave most of the rest away to my friends. I also had a few that were eaten down to the top of the roots by grasshoppers and rabbits last year and this year, they all came back also, they look even stronger than the ones that didn't get eaten. I don't expect to see any fruits this year since they're still not a year old yet, hope I will see some fruits in a couple of years from now.

The big box stores around here (Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply, Farm and Home, etc.) have begun selling something 2 of the locally owned garden supply stores have been selling for many years, something called West Michigan Mix, a blend of Kentucky Blue Grass, Perennial Rye, and a Fescue, so there will most likely be something similar in your area of California, although probably not that blend. Just do not get something called "contractors blend" which is mostly weedy grasses and quite cheap.

Are you thinking of this year or next year? This year I'd say no. Next year is iffy... some varieties can take 90 days, those days start counting at zero the day you'd transplant a 5 to 7 week old (or 6 to 8 week old) plant outside, so add another 35 to 56 days and you'll see you need 4 to 5 months of optimum weather... and that's not even taking into consideration any nasty elements, critters, temperature to germinate, etc. Personally, even my customers in FL & TX & CA I recommend starting the seeds indoors, not outdoors. There's too much that can go wrong and you can lose another couple weeks on top of everything if you have to start over. Those couple weeks can be very important in getting any crop at all, especially in warmer areas that only have certain "windows" of opportunities to beat the heat. Oh well . . .

I love Kumara. Would have been nice to try to grow it in the USA. Unfortunately, unless you have seeds, the Agriculture people would never let me bring it into the USA, because live foodcrops are forbidden, unless very restrictive special permits and dispensations are granted (not usually given to non-university or agriculture industry people).

I have kumara in my garden but are limited as to which states I can send it to, CA is one the no-no list.
At this time, they are still in the ground as we never got around to digging many up so hopefully in a few weeks time they will start sprouting again.

If you can buy a kumara in a food store just leave it lying around your kitchen in a light position until it sprouts shoots. When they are about 4inches (8cm) long break them off the vegetable and place in a pot with potting soil just like any other cutting and they will grow. Transplant into a warm sunny spot when roots are well formed and your on your way. I would love to get my hands on the Black ornamental one Ipomea batatas "Blackie" which I see in so many American gardening magazines.

Unfortunately you just cannot walk into a supermarket here in the US and buy kumara!

I have read that the pre-european kumara varieties were only the size of your finger & that they were bred with imported american varieties to make them bigger.
