need some e-mail help Outlook Express 5

When Microsft Outlook died and no-one could find the original installation disc, I hung in my using Microsoft Outlook Express 5 for e-mail.

The problem is if I leave computer on but disconnect from the Internet, when I re-connect, my server details are wrong.

If I choose Tools/Accounts/Properties/Servers, my Pop 3 incoming mail account keeps defaulting to "localhost" when it should match my outgoing account, and my e-mail address adds something after my proper address. I change it, apply and OK but it keeps doing it.

Apart from dynamite any ideas? And, errr, the obvious, keep it simple for this dinosaur.

Hi Alison, I use Incredmail which I downloaded free from the internet. Once you put in your email settings it should work ok. It has heaps of letter backgrounds and other things to fancy up your emails.

Alison....I managed to delete all my Outlook/Office/Excel off my computer a while ago, panicked and called my son in who promptly downloaded all of the 2003 version for me (I was using the 2000 version), all my email and word/excel etc was still there for me...thank goodness...so you may be able to download it off the net.

Your isp will have that info on their getting started with email web pages. Who is your ISP ? Maybe someone here uses the same isp and can give you the info. Its basically asking for either an IP or url name of your mail server, and which protocol that mail server uses.

If you are just trying to see what you actually put in the settings (or change it) - open OE, go to Tools, Accounts, Under Mail, highlight the address you are checking and click on Properties. At the top of the next box that comes up, click on Servers. Hope this helps. Elaine

I have just loaded Outlook on a new notebook, Outlook 2002. I've used this version of Outlook since 2002, but alas that notebook did a big crash. The good news, I had all but the last two days of message folders on a back up drive, in a folder called "Exchange". Now, on my old XP home there was a folder called "OutlookFolders" which had "Exchange" and other details in it. So, all I need to do is copy the back-up data into the new computer's "OutlookFolders", but I can't find them, nor can the XP search. I do have folders maked to shoe hidden. Any help would be appreciated.

urlee, I know what you mean about dialup. I just got high speed in February. I did find the answer to my problem with OE. Just on the off chance something might show up I checked my e-mail settings at my server for my e-mail. When I clicked the button to make changes it showed I had nine letters (shown as dots) in my password, but I knew it should have only 8. I deleted what was there and re-entered my password and saved it. I then went to OE and low and behold it worked. I have no explanation how the password could have gotten changed since it has worked since Feb. when I got high speed and they helped me set up OE as my e-mail. I don't know what my friend did to give me a little more speed, but I don't think he would have been in my server website. Go figure? I am just glad I found it, and it is working. Jane PS: No one is touching my settings or whatever again.

Outlook Express is a pile of dog poo. Use Thunderbird. It's by the people who made Firefox.

Outlook Express is a free email program produced by Microsoft. Sounds like your original program might be corrupted, so you could try downloading a clean version (it's free). Hopefully the new version will copy across all the messages and addresses from your old version (fingers crossed), but it's a good idea to print out anything you might miss if it were lost. Then you can download the version of Outlook Express that suits your operating system (Windows or Mac).

Many sites offer Outlook Express for downloading, incuding MS itself (www.microsoft.com). I used to use Tucows (URL shown below).

I forgot to say that the download can be quite large--I've seen a Macintosh version that's almost 9MB--so you'll need to be patient.
