Just found this site. I'm a young and budding gardener where i am Passonite in successfully growing Subtropical plants around the Wairarapa area or the rest of N.Z. If there is any other person that wants to share their experiences or ideas i would be very intersted.
Shout yourself a trip over the hill and into Wellington to a couple of places - the Botanical Gardens in Glenmore Street, and Otari Plant Museum out at Wilton.
If you're interested in buying subtropicals, - have you had a look in at Carne Gardens and High Street Nursery in Masterton?
You'll also get a sprinkling over the coast at Waikanae. The Akatarawa Road is still closed so you might want to go out through Pahiatua and down (checking out the garden centres in Otaki and on south....)
'The NZ Gardener' magazine often has articles on the subtropicals - and lists suppliers. Do a swoop on the library and have a browse through the recent back copies. Leave your wallet at home...
I know there's a recent book on subtropicals in NZ but the authours' names elude me at present.
Hope you have room for a glasshouse at your place!
