poor knights lily question

hello all,

I've got a couple of Xeronema growing in large pots in a mixture of pumice, gravel, broken down tree fern and sand. They're in a fairly sunny spot on a concrete patio, but get shelter from afternoon sun. They've struggled through this summer, and I'm wondering about how to get them thriving. What are their watering requirements? Should I water frequently, or treat them more as a succulent? I lost some of the fans to rot last week, but I can't work out whether it's the heat, or whether some of the fines in the mix aren't permitting free enough drainage. When is the main period of growth?

any help would be much appreciated,

Douglas
