We went to the Movies

20 years ago

In the 37 years of our marriage my DH and I had only been to the movies once .

Now in the last couple of months we have been 3 times and enjoyed the experience, except for the smell of the cooking Popcorn.

Yesterday we saw Walk the Line about Johnny Cash and could sit through it again. Really wonderful.

A few weeks ago it was Nanny Mc Phee mainly because I think Colin Firth was so good as Mr. Darcy. Great it was.

And before that Pride and Prejudice, which was good but more down to earth than the T.V. version. I reckon Coling Firth chould have been in it too.

Now we are thinking of going to see Mrs. Henderson, has anyone else seen it ?

Marion, who is enjoying the mid day experienc of holding hands with her DH at the movies. !!!!!!

That's terrific Marion. I haven't been to the movies for about the same length of time as you. The main reason is that they have the sound up too loud. I always come away with a headache.
I used to love the drive-in because you could control the volume yourself, but of course that's all in the past now. Maybe I should give it another try....you've inspired me! So glad you're enjoying it.

Goodness, what was the first movie you saw together Marion or was it something horrible like the Exorcist that swore you off for life?
But I have to admit to the same, Babe was about the last I saw in a cinema and I came out frozen and with raging headache too from the loudness.
I guess we are showing our ages as I used to love the drive-in when I was a kid. We had friends in Sydney who lived opposite a drivein and you could see the screen. As a courtesy, somehow the neighbours all had speaker units so they could sit on their porches and hear as well as see. Sort of compensation for the traffic I guess. I thought at the time how marvellous it was but I guess the thrill would pall a bit if you had to watch the same thing for weeks.

My bf had two heater malfunctions : the first left his dinner plate-size discus frozen solid in the winter. The second cooked his most favorite catfish collection. He was most upset about his 8 year old feather fin catfish. Several months later I got him $100 worth of African cichlids as a surprise..not the best idea since his tank wasn't ready for them and they all died :( When I was young I had a plecostomus that started to creep me out the bigger it got. It had a crooked face, bulging/bug eyes, and would chase you as you walked by the tank. Worse: It started to jump out of the water and bark!!! I was ready to give it away, then one morning, although we have a hood, my brother found it dried up on the living room floor, several feet away from the tank. He decided to flush it down the toilet, which resulted in us having to call the plumbers. My kids crashed my tank of platies that were gifted to me. The gal had them for 13 years (highly inbred but she loved them, so I loved them). I saved about 7 out of 40+. The kids had accidentally dropped a stuffed animal in there when the lid was partially opened, I think whatever beans/beads were in the stuffed animal leached harmful chemicals into the tank because they died so quickly. Lastly, I had an upside down catfish that I really loved, he was shy at first but became so fun to watch. One day he disappeared without a trace. No body, no bones, nothing. I looked under decor, sifted through gravel, and gave up not knowing what had happened. Six months later, I decide to take out my under-gravel filter, and something sharp poked me. There he was!!! Alive and swimming. I'm not sure how he got down there, and I don't use the undergravel filters anymore :)

I LOVE your idea and can't wait to do the same with my grand daughter who is 2 years old now. I worked long hours while raising my three children alone and did a similar thing on much smaller scale with each of my three children - giving them each an hour or so alone with me each week. There things might be more activity than you would wish for but we have always loved the outdoors. My son had few interests and was the most difficult for me to connect with. Things he LOVED: flying a kite, roller skating, miniture golf, video games, rafting down a little fork of a nearby river that took us a number of weeks to build the raft from trashed lumber(bad time of year for you and I don't know where you live in Washington), BBQ breakfast on a tiny grill in the wilderness park (bacon on toast with hot cereal and fruit brought in a thermas was fast and easy then we would go hiking. I know you could take easy snacks without the trouble of the grill but he LOVED to eat hot food in the wide open spaces and it just tasted better there. Things he did not like but your grand son may: bicycle a along wetlands or beach or natural trail, walk thru a botanical garden, plant a tree (my carrotwood and palm trees were always dropping seedlings)in the countryside, scrapbooking, ceramics you mentioned, bought him a disposable camera and spent a day learning basis photography skills and taking pictures of family members, pets, friends, school or whatever he wished for a "My Life in 1974" (or whatever year it was), made a family tree collage from baby pictures of all the family members, built a bird house, bat house, visited the zoo, visited the farm that sells parrots, visited an ostrige farm, visited a llama farm, visited a turkey farm, had him write a story, and draw illistrations that I had bound into a book but now you can buy kits over Amazon.com for books you can have published and dishes they paint, send in and have made permanent. In fact, I have seen kits on Amazon.com to paint their own umberella, table lamp, cup, bird bath, bird feeder, bird house, etc. Also Home Depot or Lowes have kits for bird houses, bird feeders. I don't know if ANY of these ideas can work for you, but good look and I am sure you will get some GREAT suggestions. My girls LOVED to go for "high tea" where a friend of mine who owned a British tea house. (I was a nurse and massage/accupressurist and we would do trades). I do not know that your grandson would enjoy high tea. Also, the children LOVED to go to a really fancy restaurant (we could not afford to eat at) but on special occasions I would order each a Shirley Temple type of drink and we could overlook the harbor or bay to end a wonderful day. Oh, we use to drive to Disneyland and watch the grand finale fireworks in the Disneyland Hotel sipping a juice or milk. I don't know if you have anything in your area that you can get a "piece of".

Mine is an example of me perhaps being someone's worst date: My good friend and former roommate Jeff, had been dating a woman named Glenda who knew Stephanie through the horse world. All four of us happened to be at a party at the house of a woman, Lynn, who worked at the same place as Jeff and who also had horses. I remember having seen Stephanie at the party but being my usual shy, fearful self, I didn't interact with her. Reportedly after the party Glenda was talking with Stephanie who was complaining about not finding anyone she liked, and Glenda suggested that since I was at the party alone, that "Bob" might be interested and/or available. "Who's Bob" Stephanie responded. She emailed me shortly thereafter, introducing herself and after a short exchange asked whether I'd be interested in going to see Laurie Anderson in concert at the Wexner Center at the Ohio State University. I responded "I love Laurie Anderson, I have several of her albums. In fact I'm already going to that concert with Jeff, he has two tickets." She suggested that perhaps we could go out to dinner before the concert, and we decided upon Falafal House, a Middle Eastern restaurant at the south end of the Ohio State campus. We met at the restaurant, and she brought her roommate Jenny with her. The three of us ordered and chatted while waiting for the food to arrive. And chatted more during dinner. Finally, glancing at my watch, I said I have to hurry off to the concert, I don't want to be late. I said, "Bye, I had a great time." And I left. She and Jenny walked back to their apartment together while I went to meet my friend Jeff at the concert. Now anyone with even a bit of sense would probably ask, "What were you thinking?" "Why didn't you simply tell Jeff, 'Hey man I need your ticket' or tell him 'I have other plans' and just get two tickets yourself? My only response to that is: there were probably good reasons why I was single. I was painfully shy, emotionally immature, and terribly frightened of being rejected or looking foolish. I couldn't convince myself to ask someone out, and even the few times I did go out with someone I usually screwed it up somehow through my cluelessness. This time seemed it was going to turn out the same. While she and Jenny were walking home they were talking and between them they had just about decided that was it for me. Big red flag. Fortunately, Stephanie decided to give me another chance and emailed me the next day asking how the concert was.

As for that first job, maybe they treat employees this way too, so maybe this is for the best. Sounds like the right hand does not know what the left is doing. He's had success in his job huntm yay!. I'm so happy for your DS and for you as well because we mom's suffer when our kids suffer, don't we? Oh, happy day! He will do fine and will grow personally and professionally over time. Don't worry, Mom!

LOL Alison, I remember the first movie well.

It was Hatari and has some of the funniest scenes in it.
We went to the Drive In at Lone Pine which is now long gone as all the Drive Ins are, and that is a shame really as they were good fun to go to.

We were too far out to just pop into the movies so we just didn't go.

The sound is loud but a bit of cotton wool helps to deaden it, I found. and DH is half deaf so it doesn't bother him.

There are some good movies, in amongst all the violence and buildings being blown to bits, that leave a happy feeling when you leave.

If you get the chance to see Memoirs of a Geisha, do go. It is the best movie i have seen in a long time.

We just missed it, it finished last week and we wforget to get in there before it finished.

me and me lovley enjoyed a harrison ford movie the other day going to go see otehrs that are coming along as well.

the movie was 'firewall' had my sweety hanging on to my had tight most of the way through very good movie. shared the experience with 4 other movie goers couldn't say it was crowded hey lol?

i was also told that we should go see 'keeping mum', but missed it so will get on dvd first release.

yep now we are back in the 'burbs movies will be on our sort of regular agenda.

I havent seen Mrs Henderson Marion but I did see the new P &P very interesting, to me it had more of a Thomas Hardy feel to it. Pigs in the house indeed! Just dont go rolling any jaffas down the aisles!
BTW I believe you are going overseas soon? When do you go?
We are leaving for Italy France America and Canada on 4 May. cheers pam

Oh Pam, don't jaffas down the isle remind you of the days long gone when we were kids, well me anyway, sitting in canvas seats on a Saturday afternoon watching cowboys and indians.

We are leaving on 26th May , only doing the England, scotland and Ireland bit this time, though we are thinking of a few days in Paris if they stop rioting over there for us.
I would love to go and see Monet's garden there.

Have a wonderful trip, you sure are covering some countries.

Yep saturday afternoon pics were the best. We would buy pollywaffles or violet crumbles and go to see an Elvis movie.Today was my mothers 82nd birthday and on the way home from her house I actually pointed out the old Saturday movie theatre to my children on the way home. It was such an axciting feeling to go to the movies in those days, I am glad you have recaptured that feeling!

I regret not going to see Lord of the Rings at the movies. Enjoying the DVD's, would've been great to see them on the big screen. I think the last thing we all went to see was the last Star Trek movie. What a disappointment. Haven't heard of anything much that sounded interesting until Walk the Line. I'll buy the DVD but I don't know if I'd go to the movies to see it. Rest of the family has shown no interest. I miss the drive-in. The Starlight Drive-in had the third best fish and chips I've ever had (after Mures and Innes, both of which catch their own), very good burgers and excellent banana fritters. An affordable three course meal in comfort and privacy while watching a movie on a big screen and anyone who didn't want to see the movie came anyway for the meal and could then go to sleep. A playground for the kids before the show started and during intermission. Some of the shorts were really good. I even loved the advertising. Great family outing.
