I suspect zone 6 is a little harsh for this plant. In Portland (Oregon), the bush will drop all it's leaves if the winter low is 18 or 20 degrees for a couple of days. The defoliation is complete by February. My plant has always re-leafed, re-bloomed, and fruited after such winters. Will have to wait for single-digit temperatures to find out more. This year's harvest is currently at its peak. There is definitely a continuum of habit here: California harvest is long gone by now; mine is at peak, and further north or lower zone, bloom is iffy and fruit is rare, judging by quite a few forum postings over the years. I am curious what counselling zone 6 nurseries are giving for buyers of this plant.

Still seeing freeze die back here even though it has been months since the last cold snap . Combine freeze stress , drought damage and hot , windy dry days - it's a wonder the plant is even alive ! Using a clean sharp pair of pruners , cut back to green wood . Scrape the bark to find where the brown ends and green begins . Sometimes pruning will stimulate a plant to send out new growth . Do not fertilize until the plant has recovered from so much environmental stress and regular rains return .

From my experience, fully open fejoa blossoms will have free pollen (flies around in the air when blossom is tapped) by day 3. By day 5 and thereafter, the filaments begin falling off. I hand-pollinate every 3 days. I find my fingertips accumulate far more pollen than a brush, and one can use both hands with the fingertip method, speeding things up. A color clue is a bright yellow anther. A brush would be too tedious for my 1,000 blossoms this year -- far behind the 3 to 5 thousand blooms of recent years (milder winters). I would think most feijoa bushes would be bloomed out by now. Late-season blooms often do not have time to form sizeable fruit. When you say fruit developing now do you mean the area below the blossom is swelling? It can take several weeks post-bloom for this to happen.

By buds I assume you mean the tiny immature fruits at the base of the blossoms. Perhaps one tree is more mature. Are they the same variety of feijoa or are one or both seedings? If they are different varieties, did they bloom at the same time? Make sure they are getting equal water--it can be very hard to evenly moisten soil in a pot. It is normal for some early stage fruits to fall off, but you would expect both plants to behave similarly.
