Hello, People of the Rose. I'm a semi-old person, but young budding rosarian . I've garden most of my life except for a 20 year stint that just ended a few years ago. I just never got the hang of starting roses so I have a lot of catching up to do. That being said, I don't have much to trade in the rose world except a species rose or two I've wild collected and a non-fragrant, extra-large rugosa from my neighbor. I've got my first small batch of cuttings now rooting from mid-summer collecting and seeing some success. By my seek list, you can see I'm pretty much into pre-20th century,fragrant roses. Any way you can help would be much appreciated. And I'd pay a fair price in lieu of exchange. Warning to Australians. Taxodium distichum is a nasty drain-clogging weed. Gingkos seem to do no harm, but are easily available from any nursery here. I don't know the others, but do we really need any more exotic plants here? Surely the days when cutting-edge gardening consisted of growing collections of foreign plants are over? It's all a bit old hat. Growing our own natives is where the excitement is happening. There are so many of them that are not available in the more ordinary commercial nurseries, but are very rewarding to those who seek them out (and I'm told this applies in the US of A as well as here.)

What some may not be aware of is that while it is most commonly grown as a tree in frost-free environments, it also grows quite well as a shrub in cooler climates such as zones 7b/8a, returning each year from roots. From your link I notice that it is growing quite nicely in Oneonta, AL, which is 50+ miles north of me. Tibouchina urvilleana (princess flower) and clerodendrum incisum (musical notes) are just two of many "zone 9+ semi-tropicals" that do quite well for me on the extreme northern range of zone 8a. I'm looking for a "division", "cutting", "seedling"....whatever, please - not people who quibble over simple semantics. Thanks!
