I don't see good coloration of oaks in my are, NJ, coastal 7a/b. I love Gingko but their color season seems to be very brief in my yard.. I have Pin Oak, would not say the coloration is vibrant, but do like the species. They go from rich green to yellow and fallen in days. In my world, my favorite for fall color is definite Japanese maple "Bloodgood". It keeps its leaves late late in the season, late October, then changes to crimson red and the leaves linger for weeks. Overall, with warmer falls, coloration is not as vibrant as in years past.

At the risk of being, um...gently reprimanded? once again, for not including any eye candy, I'll share here that Fothergilla 'Jane Platt' is an incredible fall color shrub. All of my other Fothergilla have long since defoliated, but JP has been colorful for weeks and still has not reached peak color. She also has barely dropped any leaves. This is after seven nights of frost, the coldest being 24.1F. The only other plants still showing color in my garden are Hydrangea quercifolia and one of two Lindera angustifolia (another rare must have).

Tupelo seems very likely. The alternate leaves, leaf size, some serration at the tip and that intense fall color would all support that. I've never seen Laburnum colour like that. It's spectacular. I went to check one near me today and it's just dying off dirty green with no colour at all. Is the id of your neighbour's tree definite? Could it possibly be Koelreuteria paniculata, or Golden Rain Tree rather than Golden Chain?
