OT "Fall color" in your garden

I would love to see photos of Fall color in everyone's garden, whether from roses or other plants. Here is a photo of my very back yard, at the back of our property - all of the trees and bushes in this photo were planted by my DH's grandparents, 70 - 100 ish years ago. Since we moved in here, I have noticed several other huge bushes which bloom in sequence, complement each other, etc. I love that the planning of my DH's ancestors is still producing beauty in our garden.

Siam thanks. I did keep and eye on this one during the summer. They had some stress and all plants in that area were really light light green. Gave them some ironite and the canna also has normal leaves by now. Could that be? I sure hope that I do not have the canna virus. I do know about it. Thanks again for pointing it out. Ingrid I guess it is some sort of a lily. After I am sure there are no fireant hills around that area...I go look and see if there is a tag. Lucy

What a beautiful tree you have in your front yard Caroline. So many of the maples around here are still showing extensive damage from the ice storm as are many other trees. My parents have two hard maples that were badly damaged and used to be so pretty. It just makes me sad to see a beautifully colored tree that has the top half missing and shaped so badly. Yours looks great. Your October Blaze is going to have wonderful color Gld. That may be what I see in town that's one of my favorites. There are some that look good every year and hold their fall color for a long time. There's one called October Glory that I think is planted a lot. We planted Autumn Blaze (I think) and red maples and none of them have outstanding color.

Stuart, 511 or 521 likely behave similarly for tree's health. You can stay with 511 and surface dressing with a layer of mulch (I use pine barks, see pictures at the top of the thread), which will help to keep water from evaporating in hot and dry summer days. Whether you need to water daily or less, will depend upon the size of the container, and location, etc. When not sure, I always use the finger trick to check (stick finger into the soil deep ~ 1 inch. if moist, no water). Most people tend to over water containers, therefore good drainage becomes even more important. My mix is probably a variation of 511: The potting soil I used contain a blend of sphagnum peat moss, aged bark fines and perlite. I add equal part of pine or fir barks (~ 1/4" size) to the above mentioned potting soil. Sometimes I use soil conditioners (composed pine barks) instead of pine or fir barks in the mix Hope this helps

Those are beautiful! I don't have good fall foliage pics. We do have a pretty big sugar maple I planted a long time ago which has brilliant color. Have an oak leaf hydrangea with nice fall color. Here are a few hips from Orangeaid...they look like little pumpkins:

Sheila - my favorite of your pics is the last one, with a rose blooming happily in the foreground, and that amazing tree which looks like it's on fire in the background.

Sheila - the vista with your barn is gorgeous - you should get a painter to paint it for you.

Lovely Fall foliage on the rose - we don't have cold enough temps here, or I don't have the right roses - none of mine defoliate in the winter.
