Seeking nest box camera suggestions

I would like to set up 1 or 2 bluebird inside nest box cameras as part of a class lesson plan. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to where I can purchase these kits? Should I go solar? If you have done this with your school I'd love to hear about your experience. Any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I know my answer is WAAAY afer the fact, but I thought I'd post anyway. I have the Hawk Eye Video
Camera in my bluebird box at home, where I had chickadees nesting last summer. It has a 100' foot A/V cable that hooks up directly to a TV with RCA audio/video jacks. The power cord is in the same cable, and I just run it though a window. I use Pinnacle Video Transfer and Pinnacle Studio to capture the video as mpeg and make YouTube videos. I also burned a DVD. I dug a trench and laid PVC pipe for the cable to run through underground. The only thing I had a problem with was radio interference in the audio. I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it, so for most of the summer I left the audio cable unplugged. Toward the end of the nest I plugged it back in, and the figured out how to get rid of the interference through noise reduction in the Pinnacle software. Here's an example from YouTube: Overlook Circle Chickadee Nest July 10-15 , 2008. The last 7 minutes has audio (when I finally figured out how to get rid of the interference.) The YouTube quality isn't quite as good as what you'll see directly from the camera or when you burn a DVD at the highest quality. It was really cool to see and I'm sure kids would love it!

I had an interesting situation at our house. Bought a flower planter and left it on our front porch about chest high off the porch. I saw a bird's nest appear a couple weeks later but never saw a bird so I tossed the nest into the bushes to mulch. Then I saw the flowers were trampled and looked to see why and found 3 Robin's eggs in the flower bed. I used utensils to retrieve the nest from the bushes and carefully laid the 3 eggs into the nest. All the while the mama Robin was squawking at me. I checked and saw the bird returned to the nest and was doing some tidying up. Then low and behold she reclaimed the nest. Later that same day I saw 4 eggs as she apparently had one in reserve. She is nesting nicely now and we can't wait to see her little hatchlings come to life. I did handle the nest by hand at first when I tossed it but who knows if the bird cared. It makes sense that birds don't have a sense of smell.

First of all don't put worms right by the nestbox...you will be attracting other birds and predators. If they come to your feeders put the worms there for them. Second if you don't have a baffle add one. Just because you didn't have a predator get your Blues last year doesn't mean something won't get the Dees this year. Wobbling stovepipe is cheap and easy to put up and will deter climbing predators. Chickadees lay one egg a day until the clutch is complete usually with 6-8 eggs. The eggs are usually covered up by a layer of fur (blanket) to hide the eggs. Once the clutch is complete the momma will start incubation which takes 12-13 days. From hatching fledging usually occurs around day 16. Never check on a nestbox in the morning if you think they may be laying eggs, you do not want to disturb her while she is laying. Some Dees will stay on the nest during monitoring, that is normal. Once you know how many eggs there are (usually during incubation you may be able to see if she leaves them uncovered) and estimate when they will hatch, then count the days and do not open the box after day 10/11 from hatching to prevent premature fledging. Yes, if it's the Van Ert, cover or remove the orange dot. Just wanted to add my input. I agree, and they should be EXTREMELY easy to trap with an active nest of theirs. I usually capture the male before he has a mate, so it can take some time before he FINALLY goes in. Let me tell you, I've had the trap set and watched, and a few males would chirp on the box, land on the door, return to the roof, fly off, etc, without going in. This will put you in a bad mood, especially if you're impatient, like me. You may also trap BOTH birds at once. This happens on strange rare occasions with the Van Ert. I've had it happen twice. It was hysterical! both birds were chirping in the box, all panicked! I know how you feel about the chirping too! There is nothing attractive about House Sparrow vocalizations! They're annoying, if anything. ~Tim~

I was late reading this thread but it sure is interesting! :D Kathy, as far as mockingbirds nesting in high traffic areas.....sometimes they do! "My" mockers nested in a Juniper shrub that backs up to my mail box. And it's a good thing I am over 60 pounds cause they are vicious when protecting eggs or babies. We stopped going to the mail box and our carrier (a very nice woman) brought the mail to the door till they fledged. And oh my goodness, the fledglings were absolutely adorable and spent several weeks in my yard after they fledged. Had to "shoo" one out of the middle of the street one day and the adults were after me AND my dog (who was only helping) like you wouldn't believe. Gotta love 'em and that spunk! The only other mockingbird nest that I've personally seen was right outside a neighbors garage door in a tall shrub. Very, very high traffic area once again. Fortunately the neighbors and their young children (real nature lovers) kept their distance once they discovered that there was a nest with eggs in the shrub. Unfortunately I can't tell you what the eggs looked like because I only viewed the nest at a distance with binoculars and could not see the color on the eggs.
