See... That's where the proper choice of feral/barn cat makes a difference.... House cat pound pickups are a poor choice.. They aren't aggressive or mean enough... They tend to hang around the house and beg for scraps, and they aren't strong hunters or fighters... The ones I have had the best luck with were Bobcat/house cat crosses or Coon cat crosses... They tend to keep enough tame in them where they won't attack you for the sheer joy of it and they don't bite too much when you touch them... but they are wild enough and are strong hunters and fighters... Coyotes and local dogs don't mess with the bobcat crosses too much for good reason... Thanks

I had the most fun with my squirrels when I got to watch them slide off the feeder pole! I don't want the squirrels to eat my tomatoes, so I don't want to feed them all winter. I made a little platform and put it on top of rebar I'd put into the ground. I placed it far enough from the roof and a tree that they couldn't jump onto it. They climbed the rebar very easily, so I greased it with Crisco. Oh, that was so funny! each squirrel would get a couple of feet up, start sliding, then turn around and jump down. Some tried climbing a nearby shepherd's crook in hopes of jumping from there to the feeder, but their paws were so greasy, they slipped off of that! After a day or 2 of that, I thought they gave up forever. Actually, they knew when the Crisco got dirty enough to be sticky, and there they were in the feeder again! I used vaseline for the second dose, as I don't think it will get sticky like that. I've had the feeder in place for about 9 months, and only had to apply grease twice--I'm happy! Hosta, I researched how to give the squirrels a gentle zap, and couldn't find a good way. It's nice that your husband knew how to set that up.

I've had a slinky around my shepherd's hook for two summers now. It has Not stopped the squirrels. At first it did, but they figured out how to leap on putting their little paws in between the slinky rings and scale that shepherd's hook anyway and hang on it, stretch it out, and eat away. This year I found them laying across the rooftop of the bird feeder reaching down eating the cakes. So, I have found that sprinkling a little cayenne pepper on the cakes definitely works! So I put it across the roof too. But it goes away soon because the birds eats it off the surfaces. So I turned to putting olive oil on the post. That works beautifully! Of course, when it rains you have to reapply (we've had a lot lately) & that can be daunting. But Worth It because it is SO Satisfying & Funny to see them sliding down the pole and looking SHOCKED!
