With all due respect to your forester, I think you might want to consider your choices further. Red Sunset is a wildly popular tree, and deservedly so - they are gorgeous. But in our area, they are not as tolerant of our soils and climate as the Freeman hybrids. October Glory is so late to color up that I don't recommend it. Good tree, just not reliable year to year for color. Fall color, from year to year, is variable of course, but in a good year Autumn Fantasy is a screaming red blaze of glory. Quite a sight... You might also consider the Caddo sugar maple selections - Autumn Splendor and John Pair. These are admittedly slower growing, but very very nice sturdy trees that put up with our summer heat and drought extremely well. If you are in the vicinity, drop by the K-State extension farm on the south side of Wichita - there is a fine stately example of the John Pair maple. State foresters tell me that the only problem with bald cypress in Kansas is chlorosis associated with our alkaline soils. The father west you go, the greater the problem. But if you have good growing trees in your area. then more than likely you will be successful, as well. brian

Hey! Not sure how old this message is, but I have grown Bananas in Milwaukee Wisconsin for the past 5 years! I do not plant them in the ground at all. A friend of mine in the Houston area was getting rid of his and chopping them down, he gave me half of a root ball (Rhizome) and I brought it with me on the plane ride home. By the time I landed it had already started growing! I put it in a large pot and put it outside. It grew quickly. FOr the winter I went to Menards and bought a plug in large shop light fixture and full spectrum flourescents and mounted them in my basement. The plant continued to grown. The next year I put it outside again and grew even taller. By the end of that summer I actually had the Flag Leaf and a bananana flower. I brought it in the house again and by January I actually had the sweet smell of banana flower in my house and a few hands of small bananas. Putting them in the ground will not fly in Illinois. But if you buy them and put them in pots, you will do just fine. The only other recommendation I have is this. I am not familiar with Species names, but it seems to me the bananas with Green Leaves are much more tolerant of adverse conditions than the ones with purplish leaves. However, I found a "straggler" in the back of the greenhouse where I buy my plants that looked 3/4 dead. It didnt even have a price on it. I'm up near the Carrara floodplain. The old dairy land contains a fair number of Erythrina which looks like crista-galli but I'm no expert and maybe its E fusca which common name of "swamp immortelle" sounds more likely. it's not an unattractive tree and quite beautiful in flower but of course thorny, and semi deciduous. Niffsan bought the old Surfers Paradise raceway and is creating some sort of residential thing there with man-made shallow lakes and landscaping. It is of course, all flood-plain, though the soil is probably a bit sandy after their earthworks. I would suggest you have a look up there along the Nielsens road extension and their production nursery is on Birmingham road just near Emmanuel college you might call in and have a talk to the gardeners there to see what species they are using for the areas which potentially face frequent innumdation. IMHO some of the Melaleucas are quite lovely though.
