Debra said something in one of here posts about the land of the brown scapes. Meaning bloomed out daylily beds done for the year. I have those also. But I have garden beds and bed sections in full bloom and ones not even started or barely started. That is because I have been heavily adding late and extra late bloomers to the garden. And not just here and there but complete sections.

I have some main sources for the late bloomers. One source is Olallie. They do have many late and extra truely late blooming daylilies. I had bloom last year into October from some Olallie daylilies.

Another great source are the Dale Thomas intros sold by Perfect Perennials. I started by buying the few Thomas intros pictured on the Website. But that was hardly enough. I bought all the Dale Thomas late and VL blooming daylilies listed in the perfect perrenial catalog. No pictures and no pictures on the website, I just bought them having very little idea what they look like. Well, they bloomed last year. Fabulously beautiful. And even better this year as they are settled in. More buds and branching.

Another source for late and extra late that is working out very well for me are my Hibard intros from this local Long Island Hybridizer. I am very pleased to see how much better they look this year after having some time in the garden. Bigger flowers and more of them.

My latest for late and extra late bloomers are Jum Murphy intros. I had had afew but last fall added many more. These are just starting now. You have to look thru the listings, not all Murphy intros are late or very late blooming.

There are quite afew Reckamp Kelms that are late bloomers, I bought the ones I have on the lily auction.

Also last fall I added a batch of late and very late from Tranquil Lakes Nursery. These are old or old fashioned looking but if they bloom late as it appears they will do (as promised) the blooms are fine by me.

There are also quite afew late blooming Shooter intros from Marietta Gardens. You just have to find them. Ones I have and am thinking about are CAT SCRATCH, PAMPERED PUSS, MARIETTA SURPRISE and A FRIEND TO ALL.

There are others to be picked up here and there, more hard to find. But the blooms on the late bloomers and extra lates sure beat looking at the land of the brown scapes.

Wow Miss Rita this is alot of good info. I do badly need more late bloomers. I hit a local lily grower a couple years ago with the intention to only get later blooming lilies and was hoping to be able to see what she had blooming so I did manage to get a couple and yes they are blooming now while the others have stopped. I will definitely check out all you mentioned because I would like to extend my lily season and can always find room. lol! You are so very helpful and I thank you bunches!! Judy

You will not tempt me. I have no room. I have new ones coming that will fill every inch. And I have to get a couple of Lambertsons. Have to, even though it will be spring. I have waited as long as I can!

I will not listen to Rita. She has led me into beauty, but I'm out of room. Possession of Obsession is one of the ones coming thanks to your gorgeous pictures of it.

I appreciate all your comments and thank you so much for taking the time from your Labor Day weekend to let me know you enjoyed my post! hostabuff.....Stargate Portal always looks just as you see in my photo(s) and has never had an ugly bloom here. It doesn't seem possible that it can be so perfect, does it? But in my personal experience, it is the perfect daylily and if pressed to name my favorite of all....well this one is numero uno. (And I have close to 500 daylilies). Not sure how it performs or holds it's color where it is hotter but here it is a healthy plant, many scapes and increases well. I can never stop looking at it and am sad when it has it's last bloom. I agree that Royal Jester is a looker, and it is a really good plant too. Sherry, I will try to remember when posting again to let you and others know which are my favorites! Stay tuned. Jean, I always enjoy your comments. You make posting worthwhile! twixanddud, I actually received Capacity for Wonder as a bonus with an order, knowing nothing about it. At first I was disappointed because I already have plenty of yellows... and then it bloomed. Now I know it's NOT just another yellow. Brad, good choice with Pinhill Claret Symphony. It is hard to get an accurate photo of it's color or to show how sturdy the scapes are. But it is a winner. Mine still has many buds left to go as we turn the calendar to September. Avedon, YES that is your Welcome Mat and I posted it for you mostly. I love it. Of course since it was planted last fall and we have such a short growing season it didn't do much this summer but that is how it is with all fall-planted ones in my zone. I have no doubt next summer I will be posting pics of a big, abundant bloomer. I think it is beautiful. (BTW I responded to you on my other post as well). Nancy, I feel the same way as you do about orange....it's not my favorite color but somehow I have a lot of orange daylilies....and I love them. VT Autumn Fires is so brilliant and well-budded that it is stunning in person especially with the late summer sun shining on it. It really does look like it's on fire! And it just laughs at the cold winters since it's hybridized in Vermont, my next-door neighbor. Maryl, NO that is not the same daylily. The one I grow, VT Autumn Fires is by Chris Darrow of Olallie Daylily Garden in Vermont. (The VT stands for Vermont). I believe it to be unregistered which is why it won't be found on the databases. All of Olallie's cultivars with the VT prefix are his or his father's creations and unregistered. I grow a lot of Olallies and many will be featured in my next post. They do have many that are registered that start with 'Olallie'. They are more on the plain side but I like their late-bloomers because they really & truly are LATE with some VERY-late. I usually go pick them up at the farm so I can wander around looking at them in person but they have a website with photos and do mail-order business. Thanks again for the interest everyone. Celeste

It sounds like you have some nice ones reblooming now. Does it get too cold in October for yours to bloom? I usually have one or two that bloom through early November. I have scapes coming now on Grape Twizzler, Final Touch, Wheel of Time and Ice Cream Emperor. I never cut scapes unless it's just too cold for the blooms to open properly. It's been unusually cool here this week. When I came home from work today, I was happy to see multiple blooms on both Buttered Popcorn and my seedling finally fully opened despite our 46 degree night. Debra

Those are some impressive looking clump shots, how great to have great blooming lates, & they all are pretty. I like the color on The Last Melon better than VT Sophie, but boy, look at that shot you got of Sophie, that is an impressive amount of bloom. At this time of the year, I could have the ugliest daylily there is & if it had that amount of bloom, I would be excited. But Sophie is pretty, what a bonus. August Flame looks great, I like the look of it, & VT Autumn Fire is so pretty. I've mentioned many times, I don't care for orange, but apparently I like it in daylilies, & the louder the orange the better I like it. Love the color on PINHILL CLARET SYMPHONY. You really don't see many lates like Walk in the Clouds, nice color & really nice round shape. VT Betsy, just look at those buds. Can you tell I'm deprived of my flowers :) The only one I've got blooming right now is Lemon Crinkles. It might still be blooming next week, it started blooming June 27, & has been in constant bloom since then. It isn't a very big clump, 4 fans, so I haven't had a lot of bloom at a time. I think it will be a nice daylily here when it gets bigger if it continues like this. It has been one of my latest blooming daylilies each year I've had it.

Thank you everyone. I am back from Arizona where I had a great time. It was warmer than usual for this time of year, 80 during the day in Phoenix and 40 at the Canyon. The Grand Canyon is amazing and may return in the next few years to really spend sometime exploring. While walking along the rim in the very crowded National Park 4 elk walked right in front of me as if I wasn't even there. I was awed to say the least. The next day we visited the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and Bonito Lava Flow. That is well worth the drive. It felt like I had landed on another planet. Black lava as far as I could see. Then we drove to the Wupatki Pueblo which was very interesting. In Phoenix we visited the Botanical Gardens which was great. I love gardens and this was my first visit to a desert garden. The next day we visited Taliesin West and took a tour. The tour was great and I learned a lot and enjoyed the beautiful home/school. When I return I will plan better and for a little longer period of time. I do want to try some hiking and of course some of the silly tourist thing like a train ride and mule rides etc. Again thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will be back soon with questions about my next trip. I am still trying to choose which continent.

Kay- I just never figgured you would run out of room. At least not for a very long time. I had to go late bloomers. The regular daylily season is just not long enough for me.

Judy- I know each year when bloom time ends people say I have to get some late bloomers. So I figgured I would try to steer people in the right direction.

Rita - Thanks for posting this. I did not know about the Dale Thomas lates. Which ones did you get? Be sure to post photos of them when they bloom.

I just sort of post pictures with my regular daily blooms threads. Really, they are quite nice. I think that anyone looking to add really pretty late bloomers should get at least afew of these.

Wow! You really have a lot of Thomas intros. Are they all late bloomers? I've heard of Apache War Dance but not the others until now. I'm very interested in Sellstation Campfire. Do you have photo of it your could post here?

Rita...which of the Dale Thomas daylilies that "didn't" bloom yet, and are still in bud (as I am looking for VLates) that aren't yellow? Would you know?

I have been buying from Oallies for years (was actually at their nursery a few years back) but have been very disappointed lately on the small size plants that they have been recently sending (I only buy size A plants.) It was so much better several years ago. Chris did send me a couple to make up for it...but I had bought so much from them last year and this year, it doesn't solve the problem. Anyway, thanks for the help. Andrea

Not every Dale Thomas intro is late but since that is what he specialised in most are late or later. I also have one called TWO JANES which is mid late and blooms before any of these. Every Thomas intro I listed is either late blooming or VL. I started with afew pictured on the website. The following year I got the Perfect Perennial Catalog. I went thru it, checked off every late or VL blooming Thomas intro and bought them.

I will have to take another picture of SELLSTAION CAMFIRE, I don't have a decent photo to post.

Andrea- I do have lots of Olallies and love them. Did get mostly nice sized divisions but afew smaller ones one year. Didn't stop me and next time I ordered they were a good size again.

Another just just started is LAST MAN STANDING (Benz) which I have in the same gardenbed and also bought from PERFECT PERENNIALS. It is a STUNNING bicolor. Plus the Kendig intro AUGUST SUNSET started not long ago.

I don't know if you can see all the scapes and buds on DANCING WITH SANDRA pictured here but its loaded.

Also keep on mind that things usually start later than this. Most EVERYTHING started early here. The regular bloom season satarted at least TWO WEEKS early so the late bloomers are early for them.

Also Murphy intros are great for late blooming. Some Murphy intros that just, just started are-

HARD TIMES

None of these are yellows although HELLO HELEN is yellow with a red eye. None are plain looking !!!!!!

And my picture thread for today shows two Goldners I got on the Lily Auction that are true lates (just started).

This subject keeps on coming up. Honestly I am too lazy to rewrite it so I am bumping this thread up for those of you interested. I know its an old post but the information is as good this year as it was last year.

Also please remember that all this late stuff would have bloomed even later than it did last year on any normal year. Last year my daylilies were blooming in May due to the excessive heat so even the lates were earlier than normal. This year things have pretty much gone back to the way they are supposed to be.

What a joy it is to have late bloomers. So many first flowers open yesterday, seven more today and I can see there will be more first flowers tomorrow. That doesn't count the fact that I didn't manage to shoot each one on the FFO. This after many weeks of the regular season bloomers going strong. Still going too.

My quesstion is how do late bloomers do in high heat and drought? Are they going to hold up, or should those of us in these warm zones realize late bloomers may not be able to perform for us because it's too hot. All info abut this is very welcome. Avedon

Avedon - My lates bloom in drought and high heat. Some of them do experience some bud drop. I water them daily.

Just to add to the fun, go to the AHS database and scroll down to "bloom season" & check "Late"....Voila! One hundred and eighty nine pages of possibles for your garden. Or drive yourself nuts and add in the very lates. Happy shopping!

Since you are so well informed on LATES and on Olallie's daylilies, I wanted to ask you a question, please.
DH and I are contemplating a motorcycle ride into Vermont to visit Olallie's (maybe Tuesday if we can find some daycare for Mom). I was wondering which of their late daylilies that you grow or which one(s) you recommend. (And photos would be nice if it's not too much bother).

I promise to take pictures if I do get to go!
