What is a sucker?

AngieAnders

Suckers are offsets from the original rose. These will spring up at some distance from the roots of an established rose. Some roses, such as Gallicas and Rugosas, are known for their tendency to throw out suckers. If dug up, a sucker root will appear as a creamy white underground branch, sometimes with fine feeder roots. These are excellent for starting new roses.
If the rose the sucker springs from is grafted onto an understock, the sucker will be of a different variety than the original rose.
