It's a not uncommon occurrence but if you want to be sure of keeping it, taking a cutting would do it. Otherwise I think having both varieties on one bush is kind of interesting. I had a friend (no longer with us) who kept one of these going for years.

The cause of sporting is unknown to me. However, sporting is more characteristic of some rose groups than others. In the polyanthas, for exmaple, the Koster group (Margo et al including Mothersday/Fathersday) have produced some 27 registered sports. And the Orleans family has produced some 44, ranging in color from white through pinks, reds, corals, orange, and mauve. Currently, Bee's Knees has produced a number of sports--Erin Alonso being one of the best (IMO)> Some roses produce only a climbing version--e.g. Climbing White Pet. Others produce none for a hundred years and then produce a sport--Marie Pavie yielded Marie Daly some 114 years after its introduction. Go figure. Jim D

flowergirl110, just google the word CHIMERAS is all we did several years ago. I'm betting there is more information out there today, will have to do this myself when things slow down some here. I have just created an album at webshots for you on some of the photos of Shorty's variegated which was sold by a local nursery as Peaches and Cream, which is an error on their part but this was done before a lot of us knew better. I shared her across the nation the first year I had her and was informed it wasn't the true P&C. I then went on the task to find out what it really was by comparing Shorty's with all the variegated plants I could get my hands on, yep them all but the new Miners. Shorty's is not like the other variegated ones and takes special requirements to get her at her best. I really have to thank Taji for her pushing me and making me grow in the Brug world. This is not a Peaches and Cream, Sunset or Maya nor the other variegated ones. She is close to Maya but really has some differences that make her out shine Maya. Maya here will not take the full hot sun all day when we grow them side by side and Shorty's will out grow Maya 3 times as fast with the same treatment. Also out blooms here 10 times the blooms than Maya. Plus Shorty's will stay in the Praying Position until the heat of the sun hits her, her leaves are thicker and fuzzier. I think it's a weedling. I've never heard of a sport unattached to the momma plant. And yes it's true that 99% of the time that you get a green plant, you can get a variegated one on rare occasions. I've never worked with Antioch so I don't know how stable it is or isn't. In any case, it's a nice looking plant. If you end up registering it, however, it should be unknown x unknown for the parentage. Cuz you just don't know for sure. Steve
