Can I grow Hosta from seed?

Yes. You can grow hosta fairly easily from seed. Ventricosa is one that will readily provide volunteers year after year.

However, if you are interested in growing a particular variety, most Hostas do not come true from seed. From any hosta seeds you plant you will get a mix of solid colored seedlings. Most will be green, some will possibly be various shades of gold and possibly some blue.

If you are interested in getting multi-colored seedlings you need to look into getting a streaked plant to use as a pod parent. That will not guarantee streaked seedlings but it will increase the chances tat you will get one.

Hi MrBrownThumb, I really don't know. It shouldn't be the seeds, I received some in trades with several members and they all look as they should (not white, but black). Ya know... now that you mentioned it, I have some tomato and baby's breath seeds I want to test germinate (wet paper towel/baggie) and I haven't done that with the hosta seeds, so perhaps I'll throw some of those in there too and see what happens! Thanks for the little boot to the old memory here. I'll let you know if I get any baby hostas out of it. (lol I'm sure I'll be screaming about it to EVERYONE! lol) Cathy

Thank you for your reply. Do you think it would be ok to plant/sow them in a pot or does this need to be in the ground please? ==>>> you have enough seed.. to try a variety of methods ... and i suggest you do so ... when i have no learning curve ... i do .. say.. 10 seeds every way ... and one of the methods usually works.. based on my level of incompetence ... lol .. when you rely on one methods.... one thing wrong.. total fail ... been there.. done that ... so spread the odds ... i bet in ground ... is the easiest.. most forgiving method.. pots in winter.. can be very problematic .. for the newb ..but maybe not.. in your area .... ken

oppalm: I don't know what you mean by'Is this a great country or what'? What I am saying is a fact. You can go to Walllmart and buy a citrus trees grafted for $9.00 ones that are in pots 4x4x18. They are one year old tree. I can bet that in 2 years time you should have flowers in them. If you want bigger trees go to Home Depot or even Wallmart or Costco or Orchard you can buy citrus trees that have if you are lucky have fruits already in them. My favorite place to go is Home Depot in that most of their ctrus are dwarf and have fruits in them. All you need is wait about 8 months and you can taste the fruit of your labor. Usually the costs are from $19 to $24. Are you insinuating that that is too much? I would like to know how much citrus trees cost in Russia or in Europe if you can find them. I think that price is reasonable considering the expenses they spend from their nursery to the consumer. I am not good in telling you that if you plant a citrus seed and possibly you will not get the same fruit as the mother plant. All I know is what I read in here. I read that the fruit usually are inferior in taste as that of the mother plant. Whereas a grafted tree which you bought from the store are the same plant as the mother plant. They are identical. The citrus plant has nothing to do with USA or country.
