What do daylilies need to grow well?

Daylilies are fairly carefree perennials. They do best when they have nearly full sun (they will tolerate shade but usually bloom less), regular watering(at least weekly during bloom season) and adequate nutrients in the soil. Soil should contain humus and a source of nutrients - balanced fertilizers for flower production usually work well. Some cultivars are more tolerant of neglect than others. If you grow roses and other sun loving perennials in your garden, you will be able to grow daylilies.

Chris, thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed them. I hope others will post photos of their gardens. I'd love to see them. Kathy, I know what you mean about a clean slate. That's exactly what I had 26 years ago with my place. Just a couple of large trees, and nothing much else. I didn't really get into gardening in a huge way until I stopped working outside the home about 12 years ago. Oh, I had planted shrubs, trees, etc, but my flower growing was pretty much limited to a few annuals every year. I look forward to seeing your place when you get your website up and running. Thanks for the help! It's funny I was reading more about Zinnias and many places said they like fertile soil. I also read how roses like well drained soil and mine are thriving in slightly amended clay, about6 of them. It just goes to show ya never really can go by what the "books'say. I will amend these area maybe this fall but they are just way to long to deal with it now and I already have my work cut out for what I have started and haven't finshed from last year. I just don't have the money to buy all that I need to to amend it all or buy the plants for and I like to get what I've started already looking lush before I go starting anymore beds. So with all that said I've got some combos that I think I'm going to try and work with and hope they do well enough. Anything is better then what I have now! So Cosmos, zinnias, poppies, and yarrows (have some I can transplant). I think those will do nice to fill in the area and give me the meadow look I'm wanting (for now).

Thanks Julia, yes those are my seedlings. I live an hour west of Chicago, in northern Illinois. It would be impossible to list my favorite Rice plants...but the great majority thrive here. I have large clumps of most. Of the 09s, ARNETTE ZAPEL and DREAM SEQUENCE and POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS and BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY and JEFFERSON DAVIS and REINING were outstanding here this summer. GRETA GARBO was all set to bloom two scapes loaded with buds when a small doe ran through the bed one afternoon, and clipped off the scapes like a knife. Steve
