I don't live in a tropical zone. Can I still grow citrus fruit?

Of course! Most citrus trees can be grown in containers, so that you can bring them inside for the winter. Look for a dwarf variety of tree, because these tend to be well-suited to container gardening. For some ideas about the best variety, you can check out this article: Grow Citrus in Containers.
