You can do a search for "canna seed" in the search box and likely get good information. You do need to know that the seed capsule needs to dry (turns brown) so the seed inside will fully mature. There are a number of hybrid cultivars that are sterile and "will not" produce viable seed. This is typically indicated by the size of the contents of the seed capsule. Mature canna seed is about the size of a green pea but will be brown to jet black. If the contents look like small mustard seed, fertilization was incomplete or unsuccessful. Please remember that hybrid cannas do not breed true and the offspring will not be a clone of the parent. Do not call the hybrid canna seedlings by the parentÂs cultivar name. That makes me feel so much better! I have a whole bowl of tomato seeds that I saved this year. And I was wondering as I was mushing the tomatoes and setting them to ferment (I had to use two quart jars to allow enough space for them to sink to the bottom)...Just how many seeds do I really need? And since I couldn't come up with a rational sounding answer, I decided to save as many as my furniture surfaces would allow, LOL! My entire living room is full of saucers full of seeds and my bedroom has corn hanging on the wall drying. Is that obsessive or what? I've got enough tomato seeds to supply every person in the county. Which I will probably share a lot of tomato seeds with neighbors and such. I've been trying to talk everybody into growing gardens again. Most of them used to grow a garden and they got so busy earning a living they let it go. Now with prices the way they are, I think people are reconsidering the importance of growing their own food supply. So, I've got patty pans, white spaghetti, tomato, cukes, watermelon, hot bananas and such drying all over the house. Steph

When the seed pods are completely brown and dry and can be easily divided. However, note that the majority of cannas grow from bulbs and most are hybrids and either sterile or won't breed true. That's interesting and encouraging, Hoov. I had read that aloes are difficult to grow from seed- that they "damp off." What medium do you use to start yours? What temperature? Do you sow them as soon as they're ripe, or do you wait for a specific season or temperature? Do you leave them on top of the medium or cover them? I have a very shallow tray with a mix of perlite and vermiculite...and who-knows-what, on a windowsill that I use to root leaves. I have several other trays also, but something about this particular little box works better than any of the others. I rooted a tiny aloe pup in it, and it's grown crowded with a tangle of happy baby succulents. I thought I'd try a seed or two in it since it's done so well, but it is very, very crowded now. I've also recently had success with another tray of peat and perlite (finally successfully started my first E. runyonii 'topsy-turvy' leaf in it), so I thought I'd give it a shot. They all sit on a windowsill seed warmer. I have not had good success with straight vermiculite, or with grit or straight Turface for leaf-starting. I presume starting seeds will be similar. Rot rules in the Pacific Northwest. Algae, moss, and fungus thrive here- succulents... not so much. It is cold, damp and grey, even indoors. My succulents spend the winter on heat pads with mirrors behind them. What would you recommend for starting aloe seeds in the gloomiest climate in the country? Peat and perlite? Straight perlite? A peat pellet? Something else?
