B - Frankly, I think the initials SYPH might have a different connotation to some people.

SYPHer ... sounds like "cipher" a number ... also used in making codes and other projects related to espionage ...

SAPHer ... sounds a bit like "her" may be a "sap" (but it takes a bit of a stretch of a quirky mind to come up with that, perhaps?).

Does "Support" meaning providing a foundation for something, i.e. being a necessary ongoing support for its integrity - like concrete under a house, which the house can't manage without it being there (unless you jack up the house and move it off), and I recall the biblical story of the unwisdom of building one's house on sand.

Is the basic concept of your enterprise to be an ongoing support for its youthful clientele ... or to enable them to become more self-actualizing, more independent, to learn how to live life on their own and then put it into practice without further intervention from your agency or other similar ones?

Or is part of the (unspoken) purpose of your agency, as many claim it to be of privately-managed jails, to keep your own agency in ongoing business, so to be only partially/marginally interested in actual rehabilitation?

Would something like "Strengthening" be relevant?

I like "A". If I were in that age range, I think I would much rather be referred to as a "youth" than an "adolescent". Don't know why, but adolescent makes me think of "delinquent".

Taking minnies' question one step further...Why the "e" at all? Not needed in this day of internet and social media shorthand plus there is no "e" in the acronym. Otherwise, A works for me.

The little "e" is because there is not an actual word that begins with e but it does "fit" as the second letter in Health. I have the little e to make the acronym an actual word.

I thought about making the "e" a "E" and making it Evaluation and Research

Helping does not carry enough "umph"- we will be administrative/fiscal/grant/research support and "support" is more accepted in that arena.

Monica, I had to google what you were meaning- we searcher this morning and the whole word did not have a negative meaning but I will have to share your finding with the group! What is funny is that our current study involves testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea! lol

According to Wikipedia... "Pediatrics" deals with infants, children and adolescents.

I like A as well, it flows and is easy to remember. I think most folks will consider pediatrics to be younger children and youths as the teens so it will cover the bases in most people's eyes.

Lynn, you're probably right. But I wouldn't cater to most people's understanding if I don't think it's right especially for a research name.

I think of pediatrics as 0-18 and that it can be loosely defined as "children" so supporting youth and children is repetitive. What age group do people who define "Pediatrics" incorrectly define it at: Ages 0-2, 0-6, 1-11 or prenatal-14? I would think "youth" seems like a closer duplication to pediatrics so I would go with adolescents by default.

Have you considered something like Pediatrics and Young Adults? What age group are you actually covering?

Between those two, I definitely prefer A. Easier to remember, seems to flow better and adolescent has gained a negative connotation around here. When you want to insult someone in this area you sarcastically use adolescent attitude or something.

To me SYPH and SAP have equally negative thoughts so IMO they cancel each other out in consideration and the cipher relationship is better than a sapper but that's JMO.

Thanks everyone, I will send your comments to my group this week. I hope to have a decision by the end of the month but it will probably be by Thanksgiving, lol. There have been LOTS of other choices but they were already axed by the group. We have someone who will make us a logo so I will share that when it is finished, too.

Not exactly related but I could use some good vibes for school. My dissertation is finished but I cannot defend or graduate until I have a manuscript accepted to a peer-reviewed journal. I have been trying to get various manuscripts accepted for 3 years now but am still running into rejections. I feel like I am trying to get accepted by the "cool kids" in high school- something I have NEVER cared about. LOL
