Doesn't anyone embroider by hand anymore?
Comments (16)I just surfed over from the Quilting forum, as I do a lot of embroidery, too.....currently like doing felted wool pennyrug type things with applied embroidery accents. I got a kick out of this posting subject, for I was wondering the same thing.....till I saw it everything seemed to be about machine embroidery, which to me, just isn't the same as hand work. I saw that someone asked what stumpwork is....NOT a new name, but a very old name for a very old artform. It could be called dementional raised work, and historically was done on small boxes, firescreens, frames, not clothes or anything that would require flat surfaces such as tablecoverings, etc. I remember seeing, in the V@A Museum in London, a wonderful box that was covered in a linen fabric and then had applied figures of people...these were stuffed so as to give roundness to the figures. The women had beautifully embroidered hair (done with real human hair) and beautiful clothing, as did the men...it was made in the reign of King Charles I (the one Cromwell had beheaded)...so, as I said, a very old form of embroidery....See MoreAre you planning to quilt this weekend? Comments (18)I did one side and two corners of my new brown binding a bit at a time and it looked great, so I went ahead and put the quilt in my Q-snap floor frame and carefully basted the rest into place with a quarter inch running stitch. I cut the binding even to join with a quarter inch seam. I back stitched a few feet of it securely into place and blind stitched it down. I noticed that my convex curves were now cupping a lot. I picked out and undid it all back to the 'looks great' stage, cut my joined binding, cut out the short end piece and replaced it with a longer piece to give me the length I'll need to avoid that cupping. I picked out all the little snipped threads, and vacuumed up all the evidence. I re-ironed the binding, tape rolled off all the dog hair, and re-rolled it neatly into a ziplock bag. Not only that, I stepped on a toothpick in the carpet and had to go get a TDap booster, so my foot and arm are sore. I colored my hair four times and had to go to the bank for money while it was still fairly orange. It frosted last night to 30 degrees when the weather service predicted low of 36 and killed the tomato plants I'd put out, which I didn't check on until 3AM because I was in a zombie daze while I was picking out all that hand work. I'll just mosey on back to my chair and put last week out of my mind (for any number of reasons.) Comments (1)What about incorporating the pieces of embroidered pillowcases into some crazy quilt blocks - not the silk and velvet type of CQ - using quilters' cotton to bring out the colors in the embroidery. I can see a lovely table runner for your dining room table with bits of the embroidery added. Using crazy quilt blocks would mean you could make the patch whatever size was needed to include the handwork. You could also use some old lace and unique buttons too. Comments (17)I always wonder what you all do for a living. Jackie, I can't imagine working 16 hour days all week. I have the apron done for my little mentee and I cut out two more blocks for December. I had scorched some fabric, so I soaked it in vinegar. I haven't looked in the dryer yet to see if it is OK. The funniest thing I did was cook the Thanksgiving turkey. No, it wasn't the plan. However, my fridge was full so when I brought it home, I set it on the screened porch since it was freezing out. However, once the dog realized there was a turkey on the porch, I guess it didn't matter it was frozen, she wouldn't stop whining at the door. So I moved it to the hood of my car in the attached garage, which I figured was cold enough to keep it frozen. My husband took my car to gas up and brought the turkey into the house. When I came downstairs I discovered it had totally thawed in the garage. I am so glad he brought it in. This was 3 1/2 hours ago and I just took it out of the oven. I'll dismember it and freeze it and heat up in the gravy for Thanksgiving. I just hope it doesn't turn out dry, we take our turkey very seriously at Thanksgiving....See Morewendyfaye
