I made an appointment for a hair cut tomorrow afternoon because I can't stand my current hairdo - or as I call it -my hair don't.

I'll have to remember to tell the stylist - 'no short layers' although clown puffs does sound kinda cute.

Oh, shoot! I was hoping for a real photo, but this one was a good alternate, it made me laugh. I'm sorry you're not happy with your cut. Could you go back and get it fixed up to something you'll like, Alisande? Or are you too traumatized? lol

I feel your pain. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. When I go, I tell them I don't want it to look like I just got a hair cut and don't touch my bangs. If your bangs are long enough you can hide behind them.

I feel your pain ;o( I finally went to a new stylist on Tuesday and got what is probably the best cut I've had in years. I've previously been going to our local mall for the past few years, and before that I've drifted around from stylist to stylist, in hopes of finding someone to actually take the time to really look at and assess the style that would look good for my hair type. That type is salt and pepper, coarse and with a gazillion cowlicks.
Anyhoo, a few weeks ago I had the great fortune of having a meeting with a woman who I'd only spoken to over the phone, who works as a systems support for our school district. She walks in my office and...wow!...she has my hair type, my age, my hair color, and the best haircut I've seen in a looong time. So we get to chatting (work? nah, that'll wait LOL), and I find out she's been going to a local salon for almost 15 years. She's been getting her hair cut by the owner and I know it's a pretty "upscale" shop, so I'm thinking that he's probably not taking new customers. And then I find out what she pays for a cut and I get a bit nervous. Okay, I'm ready for anything at this point, including spending more than I normally would. So I call on Tuesday and ask if I can make an appointment with the owner, mentioning that he cuts so-and-so's hair. They fit me in that afternoon (quick, before I change my mind). He greets me, sits and chats, looks at my hair, which has grown in since my last cut because I'm hesitant to get a lousy cut again, and asks me a number of questions. He asks me about my lifestyle, how much time I want to spend on my hair, if I want to grow it out a bit, how often I wash it, etc. And then he cuts it, in the wink of an eye, mentioning that the previous cut was a disaster and not done with attention to my hair type, explaining in detail what he's doing and why. He was very gracious about it though, not mean-spirited when telling me the cut was not good, and not trashing the mall salon. He explained that no matter where I end up getting my hair styled, whether it's with him or someone else, to make sure they know how to style my type of hair with all it's special nuances ;o)
After he finished and I put my glasses on to see the results, I was amazed. Absoluetly amazed. It looks great, is no muss or fuss, and I don't need gobs of "product" to make it look good. He also gave me a tutorial in how to blow dry it for optimal results. Needless to say, I made a follow-up appointment for 6 weeks. I am thrilled.
I hope you find hair nirvana...it's a long row to hoe.

Ah, Mrsmarv, we are in hair synch! Except you had the good outcome I was hoping for. I'm glad one of us did.

My hair is a different type (straight on top, very wavy underneath), but other than that I could have written most of your post. My daughter calls me a "salon slut" because ever since I got too old for long hair I've gone from stylist to stylist in search of the elusive good cut.

For the atrocity above, I went to a new one. She was highly recommended by a friend whose opinion I trusted. I think the key point is that my friend's hair is nothing like mine. I knew I didn't want her cut, but I believed her when she said the stylist was a genius at coming up with the best cut for an individual. Wrong!!

The funny thing is, one of her other clients arrived before my cut was finished. With my glasses off, I had no idea what she looked like. But I can tell you that if I'd seen her before the cut commenced, I would have left the salon. ("Sorry, I have to go. I just got a call on my cell phone from my dogs. They're out of water.") What a dreadful "style."

When I got my Clown Cut a couple of years ago...I slicked it down behind my ears until it grew out.

I came home crying once after a haircut. Mother picks up the phone, "My daughter just left there yada, yada. Oh, I'm sorry." Redials the correct number, "My daughter just left there"

I hate when I get a bad hair cut. UGGGG! It is the worse, so I feel your pain! I think that it looks cute in the drawing. Just know we always think that it is worse than it really is! Always!

I feel your pain. My last 3 haircuts have been from 3 different stylists. I'm running out of salons in my little town.

Oh, I really know how you feel. I had the same girl who did my hair for years. And then we moved south. I had shoulder length hair when we moved here and after the first HOT month decided it had to go. Needless to say, my hair is again shoulder length and I will not be paying anyone to touch it anytime soon. I can french braid it now, except a little of the bangs.I have thick 'dirty blonde' hair. I don't care if they say old women shouldn't have long hair. I have options at least with long hair.

I found on the internet a picture of the exact hairstyle I wanted and took it to a salon and came out looking nothing like the picture! I am always looking for that hair nirvana.

You know, I brought a picture with me, too. When the stylist finished cutting, she said, "Of course, this is nothing like your picture."

LOL I got that same exact cut years and years ago. Only the highly recommended stylist added a center poodle puff to balance the clown puffs.

Alisande I have the type of hair you describe. Anything above the shoulders either poofs or curls from underneath. I decided not to be a slave to my hair. The heck with the BS that one is too old for long hair. Men compliment me on my hair all the time.Some have said they wish their wives would grow their hair. The comments of "why don't you cut or style your hair" come from other women with short hair. I went back to long and life is good again. You can bury me with a long gray braid someday. I will never go back to short hair again if at all possible.

I keep my hair shoulder length because it adds some weight. When I've had it cut shorter or short it's so curly I look like a Brillo Pad.

That's always been my experience too Susan. I'm sorry you are traumatized. There's nothing worse than a bad haircut you have to wait weeks to grow out of. (((((Alisande)))))

Sorry, Nikoleta, forget it. It is not cute. I've never felt so unattractive in my life. Of course, I've never been this old before, either.

Sometimes it just takes a week or so to adjust to a new haircut...so I'll second Nik's suggestion. POST A PICTURE!

We have all been there and done that. It is so hard to find a good stylist. I never have in my 56 years. And I even went to one where I had a heart attack when they told me how much. I grade the hair cuts I have received in degrees of badness. BTW, love the drawing; especially the pendant.

I once went to a stylist with a picture of Meg Ryan I had cut from a magazine. I really liked her shaggy, layered hair."Make me look like that" I told her. She broke up laughing!

Jannie, I mentioned Meg Ryan to this stylist and she whipped out a picture from one of her movies where she has a perm! Not what I had in mind at all. Then she mentioned Diane Keaton, which I found reassuring. I like Diane Keaton's hair. But maybe Diane did a movie where she had clown puffs.

Okwriter, the next picture I post of myself will be after this atrocity has grown out enough to be operated on. If I take one now, everyone will be charitable and tell me it's not so bad. This cut is not only supremely unflattering to me (and, I suspect, to everyone), but it is a bad, bad cut. It's as though she put a bowl on my head to do the top. That alone is bad enough. But what's with these stupid things that stick out at my ears?? Grrrr . . .

Fortunately, my friend who recommended the sadist stylist has apparently forgotten that I had an appointment. She hasn't asked me how my hair turned out.

Granted, I go to the local $8 dollar haircut place. But the same lady has been cutting my hair for 5+ years. Every time, I describe in detail what I want, and EVERY TIME it's too short.

After about two weeks, it's OK..but the edges are getting shabby. Do I dare go in for a trim? The cycle will start again.
