Difference between good haircut and bad haircut......

Six Weeks! I tried a new salon today and got scalped. Oh well, my fault...I gave him carte blanche. Wish I didn't have a party to go to Sunday. Other than that I could just hibernate for a few weeks.

Was he on his cell phone during the haircut? The last time I had my hair cut in a salon, the hairdresser was chatting to a friend about her lack of love life. Bad haircut, bad experience for the hairdresser!
Look on the bright side, hair grows!

It’s November 2018. I haven’t had my haircut since my last bad haircut from about 2 or 3 years ago. I really have never had a good haircut. Ever. I have never walked out of a salon appointment and said, “Wow!”, I look and feel fabulous! Never. Honestly, I’ve had so many bad haircuts as a woman, bad hair color jobs. My last bad haircut escapade was today at a curly hair specific salon in my area. I have frizzy hair at times, with some annoying fly always, and a slight wave. I asked for help with this. They said they could help. But they did nothing to help alleviate those issues. I brought pictures, asked what they thought would look best with my hair texture, density, diameter, face shape, lifestyle and the owner pointed to one said style. So I trusted her. I told them about my bad hair cut experiences and I was worried about getting another bad haircut. I told the trainee and the owner who is supposed to be the most experienced and best at what she does there. I told them what I did not want, what looked terrible on me in the past, where I wanted my bangs to fall (a swoop like choppy bang that was longer and fell below my eyebrows but not poking me in my eyes. You know half way between my brows and eyes. And not make them thin looking. And to give me layers that would give me the look of width at my cheekbones, to shorten the appearance of my long thin face. I got instead faux layers, that didn’t add width at all to my face, short thin wispy bangs that are a bit above my brows. She cut them way too short and said that she would do what I asked and have them fall longer between my brows and eyes. She suggested I get a straight across bang, cuz she thought it would look better(the owner said this, and did my bangs). She did not do what she said. She did the opposite of what I told her that I wanted. It’s called Anti-Listening. Or horrible customer service. Let’s just give our customers the opposite of what the asked for! She gave me the worst short ugly bangs that I told them not to give me. I hate my hair/haircut. I look so ugly now. I’m so upset that this happened to me again. I’ve never been to this salon before and got the trainee who they told me had 13 years as a stylist in a salon. Which was a lie. She just recently graduated from hair school and has only been in the field for a year and a half. I was definitely deceived. I would’ve never gone to her, if I knew this. She did basic stuff and the owner came over quite a bit telling her how to do this and that. I was wondering why a experienced stylist would need help with the most basic of cutting techniques.... and supposedly she was trained thoroughly in the techniques of the curly salon, as the urged me, that I could have utter confidence her abilities, still not knowing that she was inexperienced as a stylist. It was only until after I was getting my haircut by her, the trainee, that she wasn’t experienced really. I was like, Oh Shirt! WTF. Then, you would think the owner would be an awesome stylist and not butcher someone’s hair, let alone bangs. But she butchered my bangs. I look terrible. Then they wanted to take my picture of before and after. The before was fine. But the after pics my stylist took, were the most unflattering pics, that made my nose and eyes look, unflattering. I would not agree to them putting my face up on their site. Just the back of my hair. Ugh. How am I going to go out in public? They said to me, wow you look great! But they never asked me how I liked my hair. I was not happy. I felt depressed and was in shock. Then it came time to pay. $40. Then the tip. I hate the whole tip issue. I hate tipping. It’s stupid. It’s forced guilt. I was confused. They had the labels above the tips like this... Good(15%,), Great(20%), (Wow!(30 or 40%), Custom etc. I wasn’t sure what to do. I was afraid to do no tip, even in spite of my bad haircut experience. So I picked (Good-15%). The desk attendant asked me how I liked my cut, I just said the non committal thing, “I don’t know, I have to let it sink in”. I really wanted to say, I look like s**t. Thanks for making me want to cover my head with a paper bag! And the owner came up to me and asked if I remembered all the instructions about how to style my hair. I said yeah, the best I can remember. But nothing in asking how satisfied I was. She really didn’t care. And my stylist just said a lame goodbye and scoffed me off, like dandruff and moved onto her next client. Whatever. Then their bathroom was dimly lit, I could barely see in there and there wa nothing to dry my hands on, and barely any soap. This is supposed to be an upscale salon. And the bathroom was just bad. My face now looks longer and thinner than it did with my longer hair and not wider in the least. In whom can I trust with my hair? I think the reality is, No One. No matter what they say, no matter what you tell them, what pictures you bring, no matter what you emphatically tell them no to do to you, or do, they will do whatever they dang well please. And I don’t believe you can ever know until the damage has been done, what you will ultimately get in the end. It’s really unbelievable. What’s wrong with this world? I am so not wanting to step into another salon ever again, when you just can’t trust any stylist to give you a good cut/style. I honestly don’t know what to do. The only thing I can think of is just not get my haircut again. Cuz it just doesn’t end well. Sad.

thanks. well i watched these guys a bit and basically they hammered out the old, then put the new in w/ nailgun & screws. using something called a header. then shaped white metal flashing stuff and covered the old wooden casements (which on this 60 yo house was getting pretty rough). then caulked everything. i think they did a good install, but as u can tell by my wording i don't know much about this. the windows are very sturdily in place. i pushed and pulled. and seem water and air tight. sprayed w/ hose and both the wife and i have stood there checking for draft in the last 3 cold days and nadda. so...i guess i'm happy with it. 17 Polaris Thermalwelds (4 basement hoppers and 1 huge picture window, rest doublehungs) for $4800 total. what y'all think? thanks

For many years I got my perms and cuts at the local vocational school, because we lived just a few steps from the place. Because they had a good teacher/supervisor the work was always done well. Also all work was done by second year students, which may be true at any vo-tech school. After some years the super retired and a new young teacher/super was hired. She was as good as the first one, and she and I became friends. When I had my first knee replacement, she came to my house for my hair cuts. She is now retired, which tells you how long I went there. The new super was not impressive at all. I got a perm a few days before my DGS's wedding and it was a horrible mess. I haven't been back, and that was 2 years ago. I don't like to make appointments, because the day may come and I just don't feel up to going, or it might be raining or snowing, etc. So I go to places like Fantastic Sams (but no more) and WalMart where you don't need an appointment, and have gotten some good perms and cuts, but you can't count on that happening every time. Even so, there is no place here where you can get a cut for $11.00. Minimum here is $14.95. I envy those of you who can cut your own hair. Sue

Gosh, Steph, that sure does bring back memories of my boys and their first haircuts. I think they did better than I did. Once the curls were gone, they looked so much older it made me sad! They sat on their daddy's lap and I took pictures. I'm sure the barber dreads doing first haircuts! It's traumatic for everyone. Grant is such an adorable little guy with those big brown eyes. Sure does melt hearts!

Give it a wash and rinse with your own products, you might be pleasantly surprised to find that it manages well and you can get it in a suitable style after that.
Barring that, at least it will grow, and cut hair generally grows quite quickly!

I've had so many bad haircuts since we have been in NM it isn't even funny! Trying to grow out the last one at the moment. Nothing worse than a bad haircut! Maybe one day soon I'll find someone that can actually cut hair! LOL

I can always tell if I have had a good hair cut because it grows out nicely.
I go to my neighbor who has a salon....she has the worst personality but does a good haircut and she is very accommodating.

As my little niece used to say "I don't want to talk about it!"

But I will anyhow,

Back in November we had a snow and I needed a perm and didn't want to have to go out or go through getting an appointment, etc. I asked my DGD to give me a home perm. Note: she is 37 years old; when she was 16 she went to Cosmetology School; dropped out quickly, but learned some basics.*

My DD went to Sally's and got a perm, rods, etc. Turned out the rods were too small and we didn't have enough either. I ended up with a most creative hair-do.

I have had two cuts since then. Still looks weird.

Live and learn. *A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Suzan, I don't think a wash and a rinse will help. I think it's at its best right now (and that aint so great). My problem is that it's so short there isn't anything I can do with it and I'm pretty good at managing my hair.....as you said, it will grow back. He wasn't on the cell phone....he was actually trying to do a good job.....just a little overzealous with the scissors. As I said before, it was really my own fault. I should have gone in with a better idea of what I wanted and been more specific. I just wanted something different....I got it! I will give him another chance. Of all times to be scalped when it's so darn cold out. Now there's a thought, I will just have to wear a hat for a few weeks.

Thank God I've never had a bad haircut.. They say a good haircut is when YOU notice the cut but noone else does. I think that's true. I've had many cuts that I've loved yet others have just noticed a 'trim'. Years ago, I used to go to a hair salon that was run by a guy that played in a popular band in the Miami area. He also was a stylist and was very good. I arrive one morning for my haircut and he sits me in the chair and whispers in my ear that I should leave. I looked at him in the mirror and he winks my way and tells me he'd had a 'gig' the night before, had drunk too much and done drugs and was still not totally with it. Told me that he was afraid to hurt me! I felt horrible but grateful that he was honest enough with me. Did I ever go back?? Heck yeah! Great hairdressers are hard to find. I just learned to check him out real good first before I sat in that chair!

Several years ago I decided to cut my waist length hair very short. It was a very scary thing for me to do, but I put my hair fate into the hands of a stylist and she did a beautiful job. But, I thought it looked horrible (didn't tell her that) for the first few days and then eased into liking it. It's been a couple of years now and each and every time I get it trimmed I still think it looks terrible and then a couple of days later I realize how much I really like it. I think it's kind of a "Samson" thing. My stomach is always in knots during the cut and for a day or two after. I know it's silly.

Orie, your comment about a good haircut being one that others don't notice is spot on. And I loved your story.

Anytime you're unhappy with a haircut, and you've "lived with it" a few days, go back to the shop and ask to speak with the manager/owner. Tell her you are just not satisfied. You will probably get a free "touch-up' haircut, or maybe your money back. My daughter is a hairdresser and that's what she told me.

Oh do I know how you feel! My sister is a hair dresser and the last time I went to visit she offered to cut my hair. I found the cutest hairstyle and carried a picture of it with me for over a month to show her. She looked at it said she didn't think it would look good on me and that she knew what she was doing and proceeded to cut my hair. Needless to say I ended up looking like Kate Gosselin so every where I went people kept asking me if I was copying her hairstyle. Not to mention it's awful to grow out!

I feel your pain. Right now I have one of the worst ones I've ever had. The girl that cuts my hair has a small child and sometimes she spends waaay too much time child tending and talking and just keeps cutting and cutting and cutting...She cuts my hair wet and I never know how much has been cut off until she dries it. Sheesh!

(I've worn a baseball cap to town several days since the haircut.)
