I bring lemon verbena indoors putting it in the north window of a semi-heated garage (50-60). Then I neglect it but it should be watered about once a month. The leaves will drop but have faith. When it's warm enough in the spring, put it outside and water it. I live in NH, zone 5. A long time ago, a great herb gardener told me that some plants have to have a winter's rest. Tarragon is one of them. I, too, have found that it's one of the last herbs to start growing in the spring. This year mine was a small shrub. It does a lot better in a very sunny location. I think the lavender variety I have is munstead. It doesn't get too big. I grew it from a 6-pack of starters I got at the farm store. I have a friend who does well with rosemary indoors. The tender perennials don't need to hibernate for the winter. She puts a humidifer next to her plant so it never dries out. I had good luck putting mine in the bathroom. It didn't get a lot of light (north window) but I think the humidity helped. I assume you have winter savory and not summer savory. It's hardy here. I did well with Greek oregano for a couple of years and then lost it. Hope my new plant survives the winter ... it's not in a sunny location. I had a small hedge of lemon balm that I grew from seed but one winter it died out. Again, it wasn't in a sunny location and the soil was poor. You might find seedlings growing next year if you let the plant flower. Happy gardening!

My garlic too was small this year. I blame the weather as last years were great! I found some lettuce today, still hanging in there. Cant imagine why as it has dipped into the teens now. I still have parsley hanging on well, too. I didnt use my cold frames as I am going into wreath making season and it is all I can do to keep up with that. I am thinking about getting out of the wreath making except for a select group of clients as to better be able to extend my veggies as I am reading about. In the book written by Elliot Coleman, The new organic grower, its just wonderful, he maps out when to grow what veggies in the extended season and through winter in coldframes. I'll be reading and studying this book more and perhaps try to drop in and see this place in Maine of Elliot and Barabara's. Has anyone else ever had the opportunity to visit there? Cheers- GardenX4

We grow under plastic cover during the winter(hoops).Should you need extra protection on very cold nights, you can use row covers that help a little too. We are still harvesting large amounts of carrots, lettuce, beets, turnips, onions, kale, mesclun, radishes and asian greens and will do so through February. Granted our mild winter has been a big help so far! A small tip, if one uses grass clippings or leaves as mulch from a neighbor's yard, be sure they do not use a lawn maintenance service or spray their lawns themselves, as they could have pesticide residue on them. I would suggest that you get your soil tested where you are growing your vegetables, so you will know if there are soil deficiencies and what kind, so you can amend your soil correctly. The basis for everything is good soil. If your soil is balanced, then your growing efforts will pay off! Hope this helps in some small way.

Hi most of the info . on Schizolobium i found was from Brazil where they are grown as fillers for degraded forest and for plywood. Certainly not a rare tree in the climate zone . Not one mention of the sticky resin or the function lol Last year it started to develop "brace roots " which are now around 5 foot out on either side of the main trunk lol Pruning is difficult due to the growth habit When coat rack pruned was reduced to 15 feet but is already push 30!! Literature says 60 meters!! Easily damaged by low winds and I'm in a hurricane zone lol I'll probably have to remove it at some point but was hoping to see at least one flower. Friend sent me pix of some in Panama and were spectacular.!! Only Delonix I've tried to grow was a white form kept it 10 years in a pot, grew well but no flowers . Gave it to a friend who put it in the ground has tripled in size but no flowers. fear it;'s permanently stunted , bummer lol. Good luck with your Schizo. keep those pruning shears handy or maybe a good chain saw ?? lol gary
