I'm reviving this thread since I've bought bedding that I thought would help to integrate the rug into the whole scheme. nosoccermom mentioned white bedding and I looked at ivory quilts, and I was a little bored until I came across this cream quilt with embroiderer flowers and I knew that was it. Please ignore the fact that the quilt needs to be ironed and that the tag is sticking out. I just wanted to try it out to see if it would work out. I plan to pull the rug partially under the bed also. Do the pillows fit into the overall scheme? Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thank you for everyone's help which I hope has pointed me in the right direction. I wish the quilt had been wider on the sides but I did want this one. The quilt is double thickness so the other side can also be used which is quilted also, but without the flowers. I have drapes that have cream and soft blue stripes which I'll probably hang up instead of these flimsy gold ones. Now I'll have to find something yellow to go with the headboard (until the day when I finally fling it out the French door).

just properly prune out the dead stuff.. and forget about it ... cut back to live growth ... if it is winter damage.. with no insult to the root mass ... you might be surprised how fast it can grow back ... fert is not a response.. nor necessary... ever ... mine here in MI ... was past the gutters ... i agree it might not be for your zone.. if its growing on the ground like yours seems to be ... probably dies back to snow cover repeatedly ... see link for common form ... i cant see where you are.. so i am speculating on the last ... ken check out the search term ... lol .. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=purple+round+leafed+shrub&t=ffcm&ia=images&iax=images

Katusha, I think all of us that chimed in were correct: that's just mature wood. You would probably have needed to take it out in the next couple of years to encourage new, more productive growth. You jumped the gun a bit, but I doubt you've done permanent damage. You haven't said where you live. If you're in a cold-winter area, you may lose any new growth the rose makes this summer/Fall. Don't worry too much, just be sure sure to remove any winter kill in the Spring, as is might cause canker that can spread down to the rootstock. If you're in an area with little to no freezing winter temps, you're probably in the clear, and a year ahead with any new canes that arise. Best of luck. And by the way, if in doubt, it's best to come here for advice BEFORE picking up the pruners, lol. John

Is your current budget for a complete new paint job or more extensive work? For complete new paint, I suggest a "cedar" color take from the reddish bricks for the shakes with an offwhite trim to match the lighter stones. If just repainting the trim, use the offwhite of the stones as a guide. Please post an update when you are ready.
