The new caterpillars started hatching yesterday 6 so far and they are all doing what they are supposed to do. I bought a bunch of deep plastic containers so I will be able to seperate them by instars. Thanks to all the knowledge I have gotten from this site and others I am confidant that I can raise these up to butterflies for release. I will start to put them in the containers today.. there is getting to be a bit of tiny tiny frass and off to hunt some good milkweed :)

Strange monarch cat behavior; not eating.

I'm still conflicted as to what to do! While the cat STILL hasn't eaten on the curassavica plant, and hasn't moved to the droopy syriaca plant, or touched the tuberosa shoot I plopped in the dirt. Yet, it remains active, moving around the plant. It also looks better than in has the last few days; before, it was kind of dingy looking, like it was jaundiced or something, not it's typical bright pretty colors. Now, the color seems normal, yet, it's still not eating. I may give it until the morning to decide if I should euthanize or not. I guess I keep hoping that if it's going to die on it's own, I'd rather have it happen, instead of forcing it...

Doris, Where did you get this camera? It thought the C-725s were originally released in Europe. The only C-725s I have seen sold in the states were from Olympus as a 'refurb' through their Ebay store. The C-720 and the C-725 are the same camera, the only difference is that the C-725 takes XD cards vs the old smartmedia in the C-720. Which is great for you seeing how Olympus abandoned Smartmedia years ago. I had looked into this camera back in 03, but I got suckered into another camera by the salesman, and it was a crappy camera. Never believe salesman! Joe

It is definitely spring here. I was hoping to see the migrators arriving before my overwinter release, but they'd better hurry if that is going to happpen. I expect to start releasing somewhere in the Sunday to Tuesday range. The storms that came through yesterday cooled things down a bit, so that could slow them down a little. As long as they do well, I'll wait another day or two.

Harry, I really like that picture. Its funny how similar in layout it is to one I have. Monarch, pointing down, purple flower. Great minds, and butterflies, think alike? :)

On closer inspectin, my butterfly looks a little different. I'm not much of a butterfly expert, don't know what kind it is, but it doesn't have the black body and white spots yours does Harry.

Thanks peg. Without you and Harry, I'd have never noticed or learned the difference. The Mexican sage blooming always draws skads of butterflies. Maybe I can get some more pics when they start blooming this year.
