So they are slimy and rotting? Mushroom compost is expensive and you are getting it for free. :) I love seeing mushrooms; it means my soil is alive. Yes, fungi it a good sign. You will also at various times have critters and other kinds of seemingly odd visitors and residents. Relax and enjoy the show. Takes pictures and document their comings and goings and how your garden does before, during and after they arrive. Unless you can specifically show that something living in your garden is causing appreciable damage (like squash bugs, for example), leave it be. Gardens are spaces which are alive and attracting biodiversity is good. Even something which causes only a little bit of damage should be monitored but ignored, because the predators that will solve the problem for you always show up later and need something to eat. However, it doesn't sound like your garden gets much sun. 5 hours might be okay in OK, but some sun-lovers like tomatoes might under-perform. If so, next year choose a smaller tomato or a grape tomato. They need less sun than their larger-fruiting cousins. You might be okay, though -- 5 hours of direct afternoon sun is marginal but sufficient here.

While mushrooms are not usually a nuisance but are just put up with, they are, nevertheless, a clue what might be wrong with your grass area. If the mushrooms are, as you point out, something that has not occurred before, then something has happened practically overnight to make them appear. Mushrooms are a sign that organic matter is decomposing beneath the soil...it can be something from buried 2 by 4 that the contractors didn't remove, or a tree stump that has been invaded by fungus. To that then, maybe simply treating your lawn with a fungicide will cut down the number showing. If the area is in shade....say from trees, then maybe you can cut the lower branches to let in the sun more, or the area has poor drainage, the heavy moisture is cultivating the organic matter to decompose more quickly than normal. Since it has come this year rather heavily, I suspect the drainage has been affected or the trees nearby have grown to bring about shade and increase the amount of moisture there. Mushrooms are not any danger to the lawn ..a nuisance that is put up with. I suggest not using a 9-iron...it could badly rip up if you don't keep your back straight and bend the knees too much. Instead, try using a hockey stick and slapshot them .

When I have bark in my soil this seems to happen and as you said, is harmless. I still pluck them out as I dont want them attracting other pests.

Agree it is normal and common - especially in really wet soil and with all the wood chips in your mix. All the wood chips may end up being more of a problem than the toadstools could be because the leaves on your plants look a bit yellow and anemic. That indicates insufficient nutrients are available to them. Wood chips can use up the nitrogen in their decomposing process so you may want to consider feeding your plants. Dave
